Why Use Handcrafted Soaps? They are better for you. Most of the commercial “soaps” you purchase in grocery stores or department stores are not really soap at all. They are detergents. (In fact, if you check out the la
bels, you will see that most are called beauty bars or body bars or anything but soap.) These bars are made with synthetic lathering agents and harsh chemicals. Antibacterial and antimicrobial soaps often contain triclosan, which has been linked with cancer. Most detergent bars contain a host of chemicals including petroleum, phosphates, synthetic dyes, fragrances and sulfates. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and is extremely porous. Everything you put on your skin is absorbed into your body very quickly, pretty much the same as if you ate it. All those chemicals absorbed by the skin can be stored in your body fat or must be removed by the liver, putting unnecessary stress on your body that can lead to illness. Plus, all those chemicals can cause itching and skin rashes. One rule of thumb…if you can’t pronounce it, it doesn’t belong in your mouth or on your skin. Handcrafted soaps are made from milks, oils and butters that nourish your skin while gently cleansing excess oil and bacteria from your body, and they do not strip the natural oils from the skin. (All soaps are also made with lye, which is a harsh chemical, but don’t worry, all the lye is converted during the soap-making process, so it never touches your skin.) They are better for the environment. All those toxic chemicals are also finding their way into the environment. Some get past the filters at water purification plants and find their way into the water we drink. A recent study by the University of Minnesota found increasing amounts of triclosan in lakes across Minnesota. Synthetic fragrances in the water have been found to reduce the ability of aquatic organisms to remove pollutants from the water. Many products contain chemicals that mimic estrogen and can cause abnormal responses in the body, such as cancer and reproductive disorders. They leave your skin softer and younger looking. Here’s the really crazy thing…the commercial soap manufacturers remove the glycerin that is a natural product of the soap making process. Glycerin is a humectant, which means it attracts moisture. Glycerin is what makes your skin moist and soft. So why do they remove it? Because it is more profitable to sell the glycerin to other companies that make cosmetics, foods, syrups, ointments, medicines and moisturizers. So, instead of soap that leaves your skin moist and soft, you get soap that leaves your skin dry and cracked, and you need to buy moisturizers to add the moisture back into your skin. Handcrafted soap contains the glycerin that keeps your skin soft and moist and contains no harsh chemicals that further dry out your skin. The drier your skin is, the more likely it is to develop wrinkles. The natural milks and oils in handcrafted soap nourish your skin and leave your skin radiant and healthy looking, while fighting off the tell-tale signs of aging. Many customers also report improvement in skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis when using all-natural handcrafted soap. They offer aromatherapy benefits. Instead of synthetic fragrance, handcrafted soaps use essential oils to create a pleasing scent. These essential oils offer a host of therapeutic values, as well as smelling heavenly! They save money. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on cleansers, moisturizers and anti-aging serums, you can do it all with a simple bar of natural soap! They are safe. Handcrafted soaps can be safely used on infants, children, pets and people with sensitive skin. Storing Your Soaps
Because they have no synthetic chemical preservatives, handcrafted soaps need a bit of care to ensure a long life. If left in water, the bar tends to dissolve. Store the bar on a draining soap dish or stand the bar on its end so that it can air dry.
