Storytime: I grew up loving my country and proud to be an American. It’s one of the many reasons I joined the Air Force right out of high school.

As kids, we qualified for free lunches and government assistance. For years we lived with “not enough.” I dreamed of a life where I didn’t have to worry about food, utilities, clothes, or what happened if one of us got sick. My uncle joined the Navy. He was the only one who seemed to get out of the “being poor” cycle. He was successful. It made me love our country and our military even more. I looked up to him.

I was told “girls like you don’t go in the military.” I didn’t know what that person meant and I didn’t care because the truth was the military offered everything I needed to build a different life. Training, food, education, medical care, discipline. You only have to take advantage of the opportunity.

And I did.

While enlisted, I earned my associate’s degree, then doubled up classes to finish my bachelor’s in under 2 years. I had my first son at the end of my second year. Many assumed I’d quit. Quit school. Quit the Air Force. But I was only more determined. The hours were brutal, balancing military duty, schoolwork, and a baby. Sometimes I felt like I would break.

But I didn’t.

Instead, my will and perseverance became the building blocks I needed to push farther. I earned my master’s degree soon after and have continued building since then.

This year, I celebrated Veterans Day by participating in the Salute to Service ceremony at the Buffalo Bills’ last home game—major core memory! If you know me, you know how much I LOVE the Bills. We’ve been season ticket holders for 17 years. Since the ceremony, I’ve reflected on my life 30 years after deciding to join the Air Force.
When I think about the opportunities the military presented to gain confidence, experience, education, and discipline—I realize how truly blessed I was to have that opportunity.

Despite feeling like our country is on fire, and with recent shutdown challenges affecting so many service members and their families, I remain hopeful this opportunity continues for future generations and young adults who need it most❤️

Saying goodbye to Summer and September... and since I hate goodbyes, it’s no wonder I’m a bit behind in posting this one. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I’m so thankful for all of it—the moments that flew by too fast, ones that felt perfectly slow, and everything in between.

Grateful for sunsets, spontaneous plans, quiet mornings, sweet memories made with my boys and time in my favorite places.

The past few months were sad and heavy, but some parts were good and I’m grateful for what this season taught me.
