Owning a small business has taught me many things, but one lesson that never gets easier is realizing how often people view policies as optional when they inconvenience them.

Every time a client books an appointment, we reserve that time exclusively for them. We turn away other clients, arrange schedules, and commit our staff’s time based on that reservation. When someone cancels at the last minute or simply doesn’t show up, it’s not just an empty spot on a calendar..it represents income lost that can never be recovered.

What makes it especially difficult is when people agree to a cancellation policy when booking, only to become upset when it actually applies to them. The policy isn’t there because we’re trying to be harsh or inflexible. It’s there because without it, small businesses absorb the entire cost of someone else’s change of plans.

Large corporations build losses into their pricing. Small businesses don’t have that luxury. Behind every appointment is a real person whose livelihood depends on that time being honored.

The truth is, most of our clients are wonderful. They respect our time, communicate when emergencies happen, and understand that policies exist for a reason. We are incredibly grateful for them.

But on days when we’re expected to make exceptions simply because someone doesn’t feel the rules should apply to them, it can be disheartening.

Running a business means balancing compassion with sustainability. We can be understanding while also protecting the people who work hard every day to serve our community. Sometimes the most difficult part of business ownership isn’t the long hours—it’s enforcing boundaries that should have been respected from the beginning.

To those who honor appointments, communicate when life happens, and understand the value of our time: thank you. You are the reason small businesses like ours continue to exist.
