What started as a full blonding service turned into something completely different ✨

After a thorough consultation, we pivoted. She loved her natural red but felt like her ends just weren’t bright enough—so instead of going root to tip, we customized a balayage to enhance her natural color while giving her those brighter, lighter ends she was craving.

We also adjusted her toner to go a little deeper and ashier so it wouldn’t pull warm too quickly (goodbye fast-fading yellow 👋🏼).

This was a LONG session—5pm to 9:30pm thanks to all that beautiful density—but so worth it for a result that feels more her.

Color corrections like this are always a journey, and patience is key. ✨

I’ve been working with this client for about a year now, and when she first came to me her hair had quite the history. She had about 90% white/gray regrowth, along with heavy black banding that faded into brown, plus leftover vivid pigments throughout the mids and ends. Before we could even think about lightening, we needed to safely remove as much artificial pigment as possible.

Over two separate sessions, we used L’ANZA Pigment Remover to gently break down the buildup of color. This process alone lifted out roughly 30% of the vivid tones and some of the brown pigment, but the black banding remained extremely stubborn — which is very common with darker artificial color.

Once we created a safer canvas, I went through and lightened most of the hair while intentionally leaving her natural gray regrowth untouched. Preserving her natural gray allows for a softer grow-out and keeps the integrity of her hair intact.

We finished with a Level 6 Natural Ash to balance warmth and create depth, while strategically keeping some of the lighter pieces for dimension and movement.

Because she’s such an artsy and creative spirit, we also added a subtle personal touch. Around the hairline near the front of the ears, we placed a couple of hidden sections with soft vivid accents. It’s just enough color to express her personality while still feeling elegant and age-appropriate.

Color correction is rarely a one-step process, but with the right plan, patience, and care for the hair’s integrity, we can create something truly beautiful.
