The Administration and staff of Tonj East County Health Department have received with profound sorrow the news of the untimely passing of Mr. Diing Liu Diing, Boma Health Initiative (BHI) County Officer of Gogrial West County.

On behalf of the County Health Department and the entire health workforce of Tonj East County, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, the Administration and staff of Gogrial West County Health Department, friends, and all those who had the privilege of working with him.

Late Diing Liu Diing was a dedicated health professional who served his community with commitment, humility, and professionalism. His contribution to the health sector, particularly through his work as a Registered Nurse, County Social Mobilizer, and later as BHI County Officer, will be remembered and appreciated by many.

As sister counties sharing a common history, geography, and commitment to improving the health and well-being of our people, we stand together with our colleagues in Gogrial West County during this difficult moment. it's matter of distance We are supposed share in your grief and mourn the loss of a hardworking colleague whose service touched many lives.

The State Ministry of Health (SMOH), in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF, and implementing partners, has successfully concluded a three-day training workshop on the development of the 2026–2027 Annual Operational Plan (AOP) for the State Ministry of Health, County Health Departments, and hospitals.

The workshop was conducted under the Government-led Health Sector Transformation Project and focused on reviewing the performance of previous years, assessing key achievements and challenges, and strengthening planning processes to enhance health service delivery and overall health system performance across the state.

The training was officially concluded by the Director General of the State Ministry of Health, who emphasized the importance of evidence-based planning, coordination, and accountability in achieving improved health outcomes for the population.

Tonj East Receives Major Health Infrastructure Boost Following Ministerial Visit

Tonj East County has recorded significant progress in healthcare service delivery following a joint supportive supervision visit conducted in March 2026 by Warrap State Minister of Health and Environment, Hon. Dr. Anthony Wek Garang.

According to a statement released by the County Health Director, Angelo Tek Chol, the visit led to improvements in health services, delivery of long-awaited medical supplies, and rehabilitation efforts in several health facilities across the county.

Tek Chol highlighted the condition of Makuac Primary Health Care Unit (PHCU), describing it as one of the most vulnerable facilities due to severe structural cracks threatening the building’s stability.

“For instance, Makuac PHCU was almost collapsing because of severe cracks across the walls. Hon. Dr. Anthony Wek Garang advised and recommended to the CHD and IP teams that any major renovation or new construction should prioritize Makuac PHCU first,” Angelo Tek Chol stated.

Following the minister’s recommendation, Amref South Sudan in Tonj reportedly responded positively in collaboration with the County Health Department. The organization approved the construction of three rooms and a large patient waiting area at Makuac PHCU, with construction work already underway.

Tek Chol commended Amref South Sudan’s leadership for supporting the county despite ongoing economic challenges affecting humanitarian and health funding.

“Although funding conditions remain difficult during this economic crisis, Amref South Sudan Tonj managed to support Tonj East while we continue lobbying for more assistance,” he said.

The health director expressed appreciation to Amref South Sudan Country Representative Mosin R and Nutrition Program Manager Isaac Deach for their continued support to communities in Tonj East County.

Juba|3 June 2026 - This morning, in a formal ceremony held at the National Public Health Institute headquarters, Health Minister Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan officially witnessed the handover of 10 newly donated vehicles to the National Public Health Institute (NPHI). The vehicles were donated by the President's Envoy on Special Programmes, Hon. Adut Kiir Mayardit, as part of ongoing efforts to safeguard the public health emergency response to Ebola preparedness.

Hon. Luke Thompson emphasised that these vehicles are designated specifically for Ebola response preparedness, ensuring rapid deployment in the event of outbreaks.

Dr Kediende Chong, the Executive Director of the NPHI, clarified that the vehicles will not be assigned to individual staff but will be used solely for preparedness activities and emergency response, including Ebola readiness efforts.

He further mentioned that the vehicles will undergo official registration, with assistance from the Office of the President, which has committed to facilitating this process. "As you know, the NPHI is still a relatively new institution without its own dedicated budget, so the registration and issuance of license and number plates will be supported by government authorities," Dr. Kediende explained.

Additionally, he stated that modifications, such as installing protective cages for supply transportation and attaching bull bars for added vehicle protection, will be carried out. All vehicles will prominently feature the NPHI logo to ensure clear identification and branding.

Distribution exercises will commence soon once logistical arrangements and distribution tools are fully finalized.

JUBA| 10 April 2026 — The Minister of Health Hon. Luke Thompson Thoan, has met with the Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan H.E. Ma Qiang to deliberate on the ongoing health sector partnership and bilateral cooperation.

During the discussion, Hon. Luke Thompson emphasised South Sudan’s efforts to strengthen healthcare services and address the challenges facing the health sector.

The Minister reiterated the government's efforts to resolve workforce issues and complete ongoing health projects, while reaffirming its commitment to international health collaborations.

In addition, Ambassador Ma Qiang underscored the importance of strengthening the South Sudan-China Health Partnership and outlined collaborative priorities to create opportunities for South Sudanese healthcare professionals to pursue further training in China.
