Baby Ezekiel’s Heart Journey

We wanted to give everyone an update on sweet Ezekiel. ❤️

First, thank you to everyone who has continued praying for him, checking in on him, and supporting our family. It truly means so much to us.

Ezekiel has been doing so well! All of his cardiology appointments have been going great. His doctors are very happy with his progress, and they say he’s gaining weight really well. They told us he looks like a baby who is being very well cared for, and hearing those words means so much to us.

One of our biggest concerns had been his liver, but thankfully his liver enzymes continue to come down, and his jaundice has completely gone away. We are so grateful to see these improvements.

He has been such a happy little boy and is spending lots of precious time with his mama. We also think he may be starting to teethe because he’s been drooling so much!

This past weekend, they met with his cardiology team, and they told us that, if everything continues to go well, his Glenn heart surgery will likely be scheduled for the end of August or the beginning of September.

We ask that you continue praying for Ezekiel over this next month that he stays healthy, has no setbacks or unexpected hospitalizations, and that everything goes smoothly so he can have his surgery as planned.

It’s never easy to ask for help, but we’re at a point where we need to start getting the word out there again.

We’re still in Houston with our sweet baby boy, Ezekiel, and we have a few more months of his medical journey ahead of us. While we’re incredibly grateful to have a place to stay, being away from home for so long has taken a financial and emotional toll on our family.

With no income while we’re here, our funds are running low, and we’re struggling to cover everyday necessities like food, gas, and all necessities for baby boy, that come with living away from home for an extended period.

It’s been a little over a week since our last update, and we wanted to share some good news. ❤️

This week Ezekiel had two important appointments, and we are so thankful for how well everything went.

His liver enzymes continue to trend in the right direction! They have come down from the 700s into the 400s, which is exactly what his doctors were hoping to see. We are so grateful to see those numbers improving.

At his cardiology appointment, we received even more encouraging news. Ezekiel’s weight gain has been excellent! He now weighs 8.6 pounds, which is right where his team wants him to be as he grows stronger and prepares for his Glenn surgery. His echocardiogram also looked great, giving us even more reassurance that he’s staying on track.

The only little bump we’ve been dealing with is some reflux, but overall he is doing incredibly well.

For now, we’re still living at the Ronald McDonald House, adjusting to life with a newborn, learning how to function on very little sleep, and focusing on keeping our sweet boy as healthy and strong as possible while we wait for his next big surgery.

We’re also missing our family and home more than ever. While we’re thankful to be where Ezekiel can receive the care he needs, we can’t wait for the day we can all be back home together. Until then, we’re taking it one day at a time and celebrating every bit of progress.

Every day brings us one step closer. We know the Glenn surgery will be a major milestone, and we’re praying that Ezekiel continues growing, gaining weight, and staying healthy until it’s time.

Good news! After Monday’s setback and not being able to leave the hospital, Ezekiel is finally being discharged today! 💙

His heart is doing great, and the doctors are very happy with his progress. The main thing they’ll continue monitoring is his liver. We have a clinic appointment on Monday for labs, and he’ll have frequent follow-ups along with his regular pediatrician appointments.

So far, they have ruled out viral infections, and the team will continue keeping a close eye on his liver enzymes. We’re hopeful they will start coming down soon.

For those asking, we are being discharged from the hospital, but we are not able to return home to El Paso yet. We will continue staying in Houston so Ezekiel can remain under the care of his cardiac team until after his Glenn surgery.

Ezekiel Update 💙

Mama met with the team during rounds yesterday and gave us encouraging news. The doctors are planning for Ezekiel to be discharged sometime next week if everything continues to go well.

His PICC line has been removed, and his feeds have been increased to 120 mL (4oz) Right now the team is focusing on keeping him well hydrated, as he was a little dehydrated after his recent procedure.

During rounds, the doctors shared that his Glenn surgery will likely take place in about 2–4 months. If he continues to do well after that surgery, there is a possibility that our family may finally be able to return home to El Paso.

We are incredibly grateful for how far Ezekiel has come. Every step forward is an answered prayer. Please continue to keep him in your prayers as he grows stronger and prepares for the next stage of his journey.

A special moment we forgot to share. 💙

The day before Ezekiel’s procedure, he was baptized by Father JoJo, a priest whose ministry is devoted to serving the children and families at Texas Children’s Hospital.

We are especially thankful that his godparents, Elijah and Katelyn, were able to be here from El Paso to stand beside him for this important day. Having them with us made the occasion even more meaningful.

In the midst of hospital stays, procedures, and uncertainty, this baptism brought our family so much peace, comfort, and joy. We are grateful for God’s love, for Father JoJo’s kindness, and for everyone who continues to pray for our sweet boy.

Update Ezekiel is out of his cath procedure ❤️

Today’s heart cath went well. The doctors were very happy to see that his pulmonary arteries have grown beautifully, and his PDA stent is still working well and is large enough for him to continue growing.

After taking a closer look, they determined that one area of his heart has not developed enough, and trying to open it could cause more harm than good. Because of this, they are leaning toward the single-ventricle pathway and Glenn surgery, but the team will continue discussing the best plan moving forward.

Ezekiel is currently in the CICU recovering from the procedure. He had a little difficulty with the anesthesia, so the team is slowly weaning the medications that were helping support his blood pressure. For now, we’re focused on letting him rest and recover.

Today is the day of Ezekiel’s heart cath procedure we ask for prayers for our sweet baby. This procedure is so important we will see today if Ezekiel’s artery is stable enough to go on with regular single ventricle Glenn surgery or if he will need a heart transplant. May His will be done.

Lord Jesus, Divine Physician, and Waymaker first of all thank you for the grace and great blessing to our family in having Ezekiel Roel Acosta baptized bless his ninos Katelyn & Elijah for taking in this beautiful responsibility and guide them always. We lift up our precious Ezekiel Roel to You as he faces this procedure today. We place his mind, his body, and his spirit into Your loving hands.
We ask that You guide the surgeon and the entire medical team with Your wisdom and skill. Steady their hands, clear their minds, and make them instruments of Your healing power so that the procedure is successful and free from complication.
Wrap him in Your peace. Calm any anxiety in our heart, especially Our Liyah’s heart and mind 🙏. Grant him a swift and complete recovery. May he feel Your presence and comforting grace every step of the way.
Lord we pray for the best outcome, we know You have his life already in your hands and may we feel this in our core. You got him! You love him, he is Yours! He is Your child, he is baptized in Your Holy Name♥️
