A new project is starting in Downtown Elizabethton on Saturday night, Aug. 29, and is expected to be completed by Friday, Sept. 4, weather permitting. Crews are continuing roadway resurfacing through the downtown area, this time concentrated on the section of E. Elk Avenue between Elm Street and S. Riverside Drive.

While work is ongoing, temporary lane closures, detours, flagging operations, and other changes to normal traffic patterns are expected. One lane will remain open at all times, and lane closures will shift as the work zone moves along the roadway.

Businesses will remain open and accessible. On-street parking will be prohibited while construction activities are active and ongoing, but city parking lots will remain open. Nearby lots include the Elk Avenue Lot, F Street North and South lots, Armed Forces Drive Lot, and E Street South and North lots. Street parking along E Street will also be accessible.

In addition to E. Elk Avenue, the project includes the section of N. Sycamore Street between E. Elk Avenue and E. E Street and a small section of S. Riverside Drive at its intersection with E. Elk Avenue.

The project will be completed in two phases. The first phase includes milling, which will take place from 9 p.m. Saturday night to 6 a.m. Sunday morning and 6 p.m. Sunday night until milling is complete. Directly following the milling phase, resurfacing will begin Monday morning and is estimated to be completed by Friday, Sept. 4. Crews will be onsite and working each day from 6 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Parking markers, crosswalk stripes, and stop bars will be installed within two weeks after repaving operations end for the entire section of E. Elk Avenue from Elm Street to Highway 19E. Temporary dashed pavement markings will be placed immediately following repaving.

Please use caution as workers will be present and take alternative routes when possible. The city appreciates your patience and cooperation as we work to enhance roadway safety, improve travel conditions, and support ongoing recovery efforts related to damage from Tropical Storm Helene.
