Midnight Sun Kirkjufell is my entry for January 2020 Soap Challenge Club, graciously taught by our guest instructor Belinda . I am in love with Iceland, so I went looking for a cool photo to inspire my soap. Kirkjufell, on my must see list and one of the most photographed mountains in Iceland, became my muse. I created a drawing from which I determined the elements for the soap. There are 6 elements. I made the sun embeds from the flower column mold from a day ahead. I needed skinny sun embeds about the size of a smoothie straw, which I've tried to unsuccessfully create in the past. After unmolding the flower column easily and successfully, I sliced 2 of the petals off to create my suns. Bramble Berry's Coastal Rain scented this soap. Even though it does not accelerate, it worked very well for these pours. I made 4 small batches of soap with a steep water discounts in total, one for each pour. Then, first pour: I divided the lower third of the mold in half with wall pours on each side. After removing the divider, I hangar- swirled the waters to create movement in the reflection. I placed the partial sun embed for the reflected sun and then scraped the area in which the solid dark blue reflection would be poured. After the reflection set up, then the second scrape for the horizon was made. The green mountain layer was poured and consequently scraped (3rd scrape) to form Kirkjufell and the land. Next the full sun embed was placed, followed by more wall pours on each side. The mountain was a great divider for this :) The top was a simple swirl with a soap dough sun ball made from the left over embed soap. A small bit of soda ash seems to dust the mountain. There are no additional embellishments!
This is the second landscape soap that I've created. Belinda has certainly shared some great pointers in this tutorial! I especially like how she splits the elements for her landscapes. I think the hardest part of these intricate soaps is the planning that goes into the preparation for the soaping day or as in my case, soaping night. I confess that I am a habitual "Midnight Soaper" and found that there are many fellow soapers in this category. Now if only the midnight sun would shine here in Pennsylvania---there's always the moon. Next soap...
Thank you again to Belinda for the tutorial and Amy Warden for the Soap Challenge Club. It was a pleasure to soap again after my 2 month hiatus. Good luck fellow contestants--you have created some amazing and beautiful landscapes!

I have received several requests for Frankincense Essential Oil soap recently. I am not sure that I will offer this unless I can find a good source of sustainably harvested oil. I think that over the next 10 years especially, it will be extremely important to be responsible in our use of resources.
Frankincense: Not So Sustainable Frankincense has been used for thousands of years as a medicine, as a perfume or incense, and in religious practices. It is harvested from various species of Boswellia trees, which are native to the Arabian…

Really honored and excited about this award from the March Soap Challenge Club! This month's challenge was to create inlaid soaps. I chose to create 4 different floral soaps from one base bar that contained 3 inlays. Each of the floral areas was carved and then refilled with cold process soap or soap dough creating a soap inlay. So happy to enjoy Spring this year!
