Summer is approaching and you might be wondering 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗨𝗩 𝗳𝗶𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 in them and what R+Co products have them? Let’s take a look.⁣

UV filters are essentially just ingredients that block Ultra Violet light from penetrating past the skin/hair top layer. They sit on the surface and act as a barrier (like sunblock does) but there are different variants based on the ingredients themselves, and the how much is in the actual product. If you take a suntan lotion vs. a sunblock, there are still UV filters in both, but sunblock is going to be much more concentrated (or have added filters like Zinc) that completely blocks out sun rays/radiation. Tanning lotion allows some spectrum of light to get through (allowing UVA in but blocking short wave radiation like UVB) but still provides some protection against the harmful radiation of the sun. Ultra violet light is one of the main causes of color pigment loss because UVA light penetrates into the dermal layer of skin (where tattoo ink lives) and can go through to the cortex of the hair where color pigments are living. These UVA rays basically explode color pigments, causing the color pigment chains to break apart in the hair, then they’re pushed out of the hair with hot water, hard water, heat styling, etc. (this is why surfers have bleach blonde hair....the sun is blowing up the natural color pigments living in the strand; or why tattoo lines become blurry or lose vibrancy). UV filters create a barrier that radiation cannot pass, preventing the pigments from being blown up by radiation.⁣
