Lip Blush is a semi-permanent tattoo technique that deposits pigment into the lips to enhance color and shape. Because the lips are delicate and prone to cold sores/blisters, good preparation is very important.

Here’s how to prepare and reduce the risk
1. Prevent Cold Sores (Very Important)
If you have ever had cold sores from Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1, the procedure can trigger an outbreak.
What helps:

Ask your provider or doctor for an antiviral such as Valacyclovir or Acyclovir
Usually taken 1–2 days before and 3–5 days after the procedure.
Avoid the procedure if you currently have:
active cold sores
lip cracks
blisters
infections
2. Hydrate and Prep Your Lips (3–7 Days Before)
Healthy lips heal better.
Do:

Drink plenty of water 💧
Use hydrating lip balm frequently
Gently exfoliate lips 2–3 days before (sugar scrub or soft toothbrush)
Keep lips moisturized with petroleum jelly or lip mask
Avoid:
Over-exfoliating the day before
Peeling dry skin
3. Avoid These 24–48 Hours Before
These can increase bleeding or irritation.
Avoid:

Alcohol 🍷
Caffeine ☕
Fish oil / Omega-3 supplements
Aspirin or blood thinners (unless prescribed)
Spicy foods
4. Avoid Lip Irritation Before Appointment
For at least 3–5 days before:
Avoid:

Lip fillers
Chemical peels
Retinol around lips
Laser treatments
Waxing near lips
5. Boost Immune Health
Cold sores often appear when the immune system is stressed.
Helpful tips:

Get good sleep 😴
Take vitamin C
Some artists recommend Lysine supplements (helps reduce HSV outbreaks for some people)
6. Day of Procedure
Eat a normal meal beforehand
Arrive with clean lips (no lipstick or balm)
Stay hydrated
Signs of Cold Sore After Lip Blush

Contact your artist or doctor if you notice:
tingling or burning
fluid-filled blisters
clustered sores on the lip
Early treatment with antivirals can stop it from worsening.
