Great read for these trying times.....let’s spread the ā€œconfettiā€!!!!!!

Hi. Me again. I hope everyone is healthy and safe.

I felt compelled to write about a growing trend I’m seeing → Bad reviews.

And it’s not just me. I wouldn’t dedicate an entire post to my personal gripes. Every restaurant owner I speak to is experiencing the same issue.

While life might feel like it’s getting back to normal, the life of a restaurateur is still living in daily turmoil. I am beyond grateful that I don’t have to rely on dry weather to pay my bills. My heart goes out to my fellow owners who don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

Yes, our protocols have changed and I refuse to bend the rules until this is over. The health of my staff and myself is my main priority.

So no, I will not allow walk-ins in the store. My guys are in there, masked, where I can keep them as safe as possible.

Remember back pre-March to the hecticness of our store. Do you honestly think that there could be any responsible social distancing in our small space? It’s impossible. So curbside it will be until we can breathe again.

Those of you who know me know that I have pretty thick skin. We’ve gotten bad reviews in the past. Those that are warranted, I’ve addressed. Those that are insane, I’ve just let roll.

I have gotten more bad reviews since March than I have in 20 years of business. Please let that sink in. And, I’m not alone.

Most people are wonderful. And unfortunately, I’m addressing the wrong audience, as I doubt that any of our social media followers are the people I’m talking about.

But man, some people are just mean. Bad reviews over wait time for food. There’s an invisible line ahead of you.

Bad reviews because of credit cards only. Contactless means, well, no contact, including your cash.

Bad reviews because of an order made wrong. We are human.

Bad reviews because the phone line was busy. Other people are calling, just like you.

Bad reviews because your food wasn’t ready. You arrived 20 minutes before your ticket said it would be ready.

Listen, I’m all for constructive criticism, but this just sucks. There are no other words.

After long days of dealing with impatient people—hangry people—rude people—mean people, I just want to come home to a peaceful headspace. But instead, I sign on the computer to see my business being torn apart.

On today’s edition of 1-star review, we have: ā€œDon’t stop here the place is a waste.ā€ Gee thanks.

Restauranteurs sacrifice so much just to feed the community. We give up weekends with our families. We miss our kids’ sporting events. We miss weekend barbeques and lazy Sunday mornings. I’ve actually skipped out on two family vacations due to last-minute staffing problems.

My point is, restaurant owners have put their blood sweat and tears into growing their businesses, earning good reputations, and wanting customers to return.

Going forward, especially during these shaky times when restaurants are forced to undergo new and restrictive protocols, PLEASE reach out to the owner/manager before leaving a public review. Don’t rip apart someone’s entire livelihood on an instance that occurred during a global pandemic. Have some compassion.

I’d like to conclude this by proposing an idea. Let’s all hop on our keyboards and throw around 5-star reviews like confetti to our favorite places. Restaurant owners can use a little love right now. Let’s even out the playing field and not let the internet trolls win.

Spreading light feels so much better than casting shade.

Comment below with your business name and we’ll love it up.

Let’s do this,
Darren
