🍊 Grapefruit season is calling! As Alaska heads into the colder, darker months, grapefruit is a refreshing way to add vitamin C, antioxidants, fiber, and hydration to your day.

Vitamin C supports normal immune function, which is especially helpful as cold and flu season approaches. While grapefruit can’t prevent the flu, it’s a delicious addition to a nutritious fall routine. ❄️🍊

Packed with vitamin C, antioxidants, and traditional herbal goodness, they’re beautiful for teas, syrups, and winter wellness. Harvest, dry, preserve, and enjoy the season naturally. 🌿🫖

🌹 ROSE HIPS — EVERYTHING YOU SHOULD KNOW

Rose hips are the beautiful red or orange fruits that form on rose bushes after the flowers fade. For generations, they have been gathered in late summer and fall and preserved for teas, syrups, jams, and traditional herbal preparations.

They are one of my favorite wild fruits to put away for the colder months because they are both nourishing and versatile.

✨ What makes rose hips special?

Rose hips naturally contain:

• Vitamin C
• Antioxidants
• Flavonoids and polyphenols
• Carotenoids
• Vitamin E compounds
• Tannins
• Organic acids
• Pectin

Because of these naturally occurring plant compounds, rose hips have traditionally been used as a nourishing winter tonic and for general immune, skin, connective tissue, and joint support.

🌿 Traditional uses of rose hips

Rose hips have a long history of use for:

• Winter nourishment
• Immune support
• Antioxidant support
• Joint comfort
• General wellness
• Digestive support
• Skin and collagen support

Rose hips are best thought of as a food-medicine—something that can be enjoyed as part of a nourishing lifestyle rather than treated as a cure for disease.

🌹 What do rose hips taste like?

Their flavor is naturally:

Fruity • Tart • Mildly Sweet • Earthy

They make a beautiful reddish-orange herbal tea and pair wonderfully with raspberry leaf, fireweed, peppermint, hibiscus, elderberry, ginger, cinnamon, or a little honey.

🍂 When should rose hips be harvested?

Rose hips are usually ready from late summer through fall once they have developed their full red, orange-red, or naturally ripe color.

I like to harvest them when they are:

• Fully ripe
• Brightly colored
• Still reasonably firm
• Free from mold or rot
• Free from heavy insect damage

Some people wait until after the first frost because frost can soften the hips and make them taste sweeter, but you do not necessarily have to wait.

🌲 Where you harvest matters

When wild harvesting, always choose plants growing in clean areas.

Avoid collecting directly beside busy roads, sprayed properties, contaminated soil, or areas treated with pesticides or herbicides.

And most importantly—make sure you have correctly identified the plant as a true rose before consuming the fruit.

⚠️ Important: the seeds and tiny hairs

Inside each rose hip are hard seeds surrounded by very fine hairs.

These hairs can be irritating to the mouth, throat, and skin.

For beautiful tea-quality rose hips, you can cut them open and remove the seeds and hairs before drying.

If you dry them whole, make sure your finished tea is strained through a very fine filter.

☀️ How I like to preserve rose hips

Rose hips can be:

• Cut in half
• Deseeded
• Carefully dried
• Stored in airtight glass jars
• Kept somewhere cool, dry, and dark

Gentle drying is especially helpful because vitamin C is sensitive to excessive heat, oxygen, and prolonged storage.

Never place rose hips into a storage jar while they are still damp. Any trapped moisture can lead to mold.

🫖 How to make rose-hip tea

For approximately one cup:

Use about 1–2 teaspoons of crushed dried rose hips per cup of hot water.

Cover and steep for approximately 10–15 minutes, then strain extremely well.

You can steep them longer if you prefer a stronger tea.

One combination I especially love is:

🌹 Rose hips
🌿 Raspberry leaf
🌸 Fireweed

For a warming winter blend:

🌹 Rose hips
🫐 Elderberry
🫚 Ginger

🍯 Other beautiful ways to use rose hips

Besides tea, rose hips can be made into:

• Syrup
• Jam or jelly
• Honey infusions
• Oxymels
• Vinegar preparations
• Fruit leather
• Purees
• Herbal powders
• Sauces
• Rose-hip seed oil

🌿 A little herbal reminder

Traditional herbal knowledge is beautiful, but herbs should still be used thoughtfully.

Rose hips are generally well tolerated in normal food and tea amounts, but concentrated supplements may not be appropriate for everyone—especially people taking certain medications or managing medical conditions.

This post is for educational and traditional-use information only and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent disease.

🌹 There is something so special about gathering a simple wild fruit in season, carefully preserving it, and knowing it can become a warm cup of tea during the long winter months.

Nature provides so much when we learn how to recognize, harvest, and preserve it with respect.

Can Massage Therapy Help Muscle Atrophy?

The answer is yes—massage therapy can play an important supportive role in combating muscle atrophy.

Muscle atrophy is the loss of muscle mass and strength that can occur due to injury, surgery, prolonged bed rest, aging, illness, or neurological conditions. While massage therapy cannot replace exercise or rebuild muscle on its own, research shows it can be a valuable tool for maintaining muscle health, supporting recovery, and improving overall function.

What Is Muscle Atrophy?

Muscle atrophy occurs when muscle fibers shrink because they are not being used regularly or are affected by illness, inflammation, or poor nutrition. Common symptoms include:

✔ Muscle weakness
✔ Reduced mobility
✔ Decreased endurance
✔ Joint stiffness
✔ Loss of functional strength

Early intervention is important. Massage therapy, combined with movement, proper nutrition, and medical guidance, can help reduce the impact of muscle loss.

How Massage Therapy Supports Muscle Recovery

1. Improves Circulation and Nutrient Delivery

Massage increases blood flow to affected muscles, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients while assisting the lymphatic system in removing waste products. Improved circulation creates a healthier environment for muscle maintenance and recovery.

2. Supports Muscle Repair and Recovery

Research suggests massage may enhance protein synthesis and support the body’s natural muscle repair processes. This can be especially beneficial during recovery from injury, surgery, or periods of inactivity.

3. Reduces Inflammation

Therapeutic massage helps reduce inflammatory responses within the body while promoting healthy cellular function. Lower inflammation often leads to less discomfort and improved healing.

4. Maintains Flexibility and Range of Motion

Muscles that aren’t used regularly can become tight and restricted. Massage helps reduce adhesions, scar tissue, and stiffness, making it easier to move and participate in rehabilitation exercises.

5. Encourages Better Movement

Pain, tightness, and discomfort often discourage movement. Massage promotes relaxation and comfort, helping clients feel more confident participating in physical therapy, exercise, and daily activities.

Who May Benefit?

Massage therapy may be beneficial for:

• Individuals recovering from surgery
• People healing from injuries
• Older adults experiencing age-related muscle loss (sarcopenia)
• Individuals with limited mobility or extended bed rest
• Those participating in physical rehabilitation programs

Best Results Come From a Team Approach

Massage therapy works best when combined with:

✔ Strength and resistance training
✔ Physical therapy
✔ Adequate protein intake
✔ Proper hydration
✔ Medical supervision when necessary

Together, these approaches create the best opportunity for maintaining muscle health and restoring function.
