When Charles Tuozzoli opened HAIR in March 1969, he christened his salon after the play about the age of Aquarius, which had it's debut the year before and whose one word moniker reflected the simpler hair care methods his business still advocates over 40 years later. Opening HAIR at 39 South Pine Creek Road "was a dream of mine," he said, sitting in one of the three chairs in which clients wait for their appointments. "At the time, the trend in hair care was changing from wash-and-set styles to the easier to care for wash-and-wear hair pioneered by Vidal Sassoon among others," said Tuozzoli. Freedom characterized the 1960s, which was known for the "peace and love generation," said Tuozzoli, who became a hairdresser at 19 and worked with Daniel Caruso in Westport for five years before branching out on his own. "With its focus on wash-and-wear styles, HAIR's business grew quickly," said Tuozzoli. When it opened, the salon had four hairdressers and a receptionist," he said. Now, in addition to the staff members who work on hair, Tuozzoli employs five or six people who "work the desk," making appointments using a computerized booking system. "HAIR serves approximately 650 people a week, many of them long time customers," he said. "I have clients that have been coming to this salon for over 40 years."
