Is your acid blocker doing more than just calming heartburn?
New research published in Neurology found that adults 65+ who used proton‑pump inhibitors (like omeprazole, pantoprazole, Prilosec) for over 4.4 cumulative years had a 33% higher risk of developing dementia compared to those who didn’t. Short‑term use wasn’t linked to the same risk — the concern is long‑term, daily suppression.
Here’s what researchers think may be happening:
• Amyloid buildup: Long‑term PPI use may interfere with the brain’s ability to clear amyloid‑beta, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s.
• B12 depletion: Low stomach acid reduces B12 absorption — a nutrient essential for memory and nerve health.
• Gut–brain disruption: PPIs can reduce gut microbial diversity, which may increase inflammation affecting the brain.
• Vascular impact: Long‑term use has been linked to kidney issues and stroke, both of which raise dementia risk.
And here’s the part that often gets overlooked:
Chronic PPI use can mask underlying issues — like B12 deficiency, celiac disease, or digestive dysfunction — allowing them to progress quietly.
If you’ve been on a daily acid‑blocking medication for years, it may be worth having a conversation with your healthcare provider about why your gut is struggling in the first place. Schedule your appointment today with Dr. Thomas by calling (253) 927-0660 or visiting our website https://www.mynwwellness.com/.
Your stomach acid exists for a reason — and understanding the root cause is key to long‑term wellness.

🌿 Condition of the Week: Rib Fixation ("Rib Out")
Have you ever felt a sharp, stabbing pain if your mid-back or chest when you take a deep breath, twist, or reach overhead? You might be experiencing a rib fixation (also known as a rib subluxation)-- often called a "rib out." This happens when one of the ribs gets stuck and stops moving properly where it connects to the spine.
It can feel like a muscle strain or even mimic heart or lung discomfort, but it's actually a joint issue. And because ribs wrap around to the front of the chest, the discomfort can also radiate forward, making it feel like chest tightness or a pulled muscle. Chiropractic adjustments help restore normal rib and spine motion, reduce inflammation, and relieve that "catch" feeling quickly.
If you've been dealing with pain that flares when you breathe or move, chiropractic care can help you get back to feeling comfortable and mobile again. Call our office today at (253) 927-0660 or visit our website https://www.mynwwellness.com/ to schedule your appointment today!

🌿 Condition of the Week: Tech Neck 📱
Tech Neck happens when the head tilts forward for long periods — usually while looking down at phones, tablets, or laptops. This posture increases strain on the neck and upper back, leading to stiffness, headaches, shoulder tension, and reduced mobility.
Chiropractic adjustments help restore healthy motion to the cervical spine, reduce muscle tension, and improve posture so your neck can move the way it’s meant to. Pairing adjustments with simple daily habits — like lifting screens to eye level and taking movement breaks — can make a big difference in how your neck feels.
If you’ve been noticing more tightness, headaches, or upper‑back fatigue, Tech Neck may be the reason! Chiropractic care can help you stay aligned, comfortable, and moving well. Schedule your appointment today by calling (253) 927-0660 or by visiting our website www.mynwwellness.com.

🍩Happy National Donut Day! 🍩
This fun holiday, celebrated every year on the first Friday in June, was created in 1938 by the Salvation Army in Chicago as both a fundraiser and a way to honor the female volunteers, known as "Doughnut Lassies," who served donuts to soldiers during World War I.
Also a fun fact: donuts are one of Dr. Otto's favorite desserts! 😋
