There was a time when I really wanted everyone to like me.

My clients.
People on the internet.
People I hoped would become friends.
People I looked up to.

So I said yes more than I should have. I overexplained. I made exceptions. I worried about disappointing people. I confused being accommodating with being a good business owner.

Over time, I realized something.

People will often like you when you’re making their life easier. They’ll like you when you discount your prices, answer messages at all hours, change your policies, or put their needs ahead of your own.

But the moment you start protecting your time, enforcing your boundaries, or simply saying “no,” some of that approval disappears.

And that’s okay.

Because I’d rather be respected than liked.

Respect is built through consistency. Through integrity. Through keeping your word, honoring your values, and making decisions that are right for your business and your life, even when they’re unpopular.

Ironically, the less I chased being liked, the more respect I earned from my clients, my peers, and, most importantly, from myself.

And that has taken me, my family, and my business so much further than people pleasing ever could.
