Thumbs Up Barber Shop

✅As 2026 wraps up, we want to highlight the strategy of positive youth development. The City of Fitchburg Board of Health facilitates MassCALL3, a youth prevention program fostering an environment where youth can develop civic responsibility.

Juan Rivera Jr. and Chase Ridings, seniors at Fitchburg High School, approached MassCALL3 regarding a senior project focused on giving back to the Fitchburg community and supporting individuals in need.

🙌Born and raised in Fitchburg, Juan shared that community involvement has always been important to his family. However, he and Chase wanted to create and lead a project of their own that would make a direct and positive impact locally. They explained that many young people talk about wanting to help their community, but they wanted to take action and successfully execute a meaningful project.

💇Their idea, titled Community Cuts Project, was to provide free haircuts to community members while also creating a welcoming environment that promotes connection, support, and access to resources.

Through collaboration with MassCALL3 under the direction of Zuly Fernandez, Thumbs Up Barber Shop, and the Worcester County Sheriff's Office Re-Entry Program, the project brought together volunteer barbers and community partners to support the underserved population.
The event featured:
💈11 volunteer barbers
💇‍♂️40+ individuals received free haircuts
🍕Food, snacks, and drinks for attendees
📝Community resource information and outreach materials.

The project reflected youth leadership, community engagement, and positive prevention efforts by creating opportunities for young people to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of their city while fostering a sense of belonging and support within the community.

Congratulations to Juan and Chase for an amazing event! Thank you to the Worcester County Sheriff’s office for hosting and the 11 volunteer barbers who contributed to this worthwhile project.
