•Sustainable Smudging•
Smudging is used in many cultures across the world and has many uses. Some say that the smoke is used to purify the energies in an area or used to send our prayers up to the sky, to carry our songs or protect us in our journeys.
Smudging is an act of ceremony. To remember our center. To remember our prayers.
There are various smudging plants available on the market and in our backyards thought most often people know of two main plants: Palo Santo and White Sage.
Palo Santo is a tree that grows in the warm, moist climate of the Amazon jungle. Trees are clearly slow growing creatures taking many years to become fully mature. But the real issue about palo santo making its way into mainstream culture is that; it is considered an endangered species with only 250 known individuals left in the wild. Additionally, once cut down to be used as incense, the tree must cure for 4-10 years before the wood is ever saturated with the healing constituents we love. So the palo santo we see in the baskets of every crystal, new age shop or health food grocery store is either: not cured so lacks the beneficial compounds or is an ancient being who somehow slipped into the swamp of commodity.
White sage has a different but equally troubling story. White sage has been used ceremonially by indigenous cultures for time immemorable. But it was used in many other ways too. To bring on me**es, pregnancy, slow digestion and more. The troubling fact about it making its way into the clutches of commodity is unconscious over-harvesting from its indigenous lands.
Whether harvested in Southern California or Brazil, these plans are now made available world wide.
I’m not going to say that everyone needs to stop burning white sage and palo santo, but to do it mindfully. To do it carefully from well-known and trusted sources and to please respect and honor the traditionally ways in which these plants have been shared and taught us.
With that being said, we have all but lost our knowledge of the sacred plants that grow right in our backyards. So that we release our dependence on plants that travel from far away lands. Continued in comments

I full jar of osha is definitely a gift of many blessings.
I have waited to work with osha. For fear of over-harvesting and wanting to honor the power of this plant by waiting when it came to me.
This beautiful batch was gifted to me by a friend who harvests the roots but also plants the seeds to assure regrowth. I have still yet to find a sustainable patch to help flourish.
To Harvest Honorably. To always give back in reciprocity what we take is a virtue lost in our capitalist world where malls sell goods so far removed from their natural source that sending out gratitude to the earth for their presence is but an unanswered echo in the void, it seems.
But in the forest, it is clear. The trees say hello as I greet them as people. Not as inanimate things. The plants speak in a language so subtle yet so profound, thank yous are answered in leaf shutters and rising hairs.
It is with this awareness. The awareness of plants as people, that we come to honor the lives we take for medicines and foods. It becomes a responsibility to those lives to ensure the healthy regrowth of future generations to ensure those lives were not taken in vain.
Build your gardens. Grow your food. Spread wild seed from the plants you take. These are but a few things we can do to stay in a healthy relationship with our plant friends.

“There’s no hurt that the woods don’t have medicine for” ~Robin Wall Kimmerer
As the plants readily send their sugar stocks to their roots to be stored away for winter, as buds, berries and leaves attend to their awaited sleep, I find myself somewhat remorseful for having missed such a precious season.
Gratefully, I was gifted a teacher whose musings of plants are sewn so intricately with song and prayer, with attention to the land and wild-crafting from the soul.
My first steps in herbalism were guided by her.
Now, as I sit in a new state, a new place having been rocked from any semblance of normal by this wonderfully wild and intrepid year, the plant path lead me down no less of a wild ride. I found myself less in the midst of forest scapes plucking and picking with song and prayer at bushes and herbs around. And more so in the lap of the city where gardens grow few and far though somehow I picked them out amongst the concrete or rather they were shown to me by the grace of generous hands.
And even more so, I shopped from online herb stores for stocks of dried herb one could never find in the forest greens in North America and those that I could. Yet, most of my path this season was not in the wilds, not wild-crafting or foraging. And as I sit at seasons end, I am reflecting on how important it is for my plant journey to be wonderfully balanced with cultivated gardens and wild forests. For there is something about going into the unknown of the mountains or the forest with no goal in mind, but an open heart to the abundant green where one may encounter a generous patch of mugwort, elder trees, rose bushes or peppermint that sing a rhythm so near to my heart the only word I could muster a description for is “home”.

Raspberry Leaf (Rubus ideaus)
Is a timeless and wholesome herb we all know. For we’ve all enjoyed their bright red berries in the summer time, however maybe less common, sipped their leaves throughout the winter.
I find myself making raspberry leaf concoctions almost daily. Not only for my fertility and menstrual cycles, but also for nourishment, hormonal balance and nerve activity.
Raspberry leaf can be extremely helpful for people always on the go with over-active nervous systems, people who suffer from sleepless nights and those caught in the 9-5 grindstone.
It has been revered in women’s health for bringing on stagnant me**es or slowing heavy and uncomfortable me**es. That’s the funny thing about herbs; their actions are so vast and complex that often times one herb can do two opposite actions in two people. Depending on where the imbalance lies.
I turn to raspberry leaf when I feel drained, crampy, over-active, or hormonally or emotionally off. The immediate smell and taste of its rather sweet leaves immediately casts a calming spell.
Ive been blessed by a wild and plentiful patch of raspberry that grows outside of my dads house in Minnesota. I have prayed to them year after year, hand plucked the leaves, and watched carefully as they dried in the sweltering, humid Minnesota summer.
And I can truly feel and see the difference. They are alive though dried. They are full and fluffy and have a character of their own.
I use this herb in many of my teas that I use personally or sell for all of its uses are versatile and diverse with applications and hints Im still learning.
However, that’s the beautiful thing about herbalism; the plants always have something new to teach.
If you have any questions about specific herbs you want to talk about, please let me know! I love talking plants with people 🍒🥀🍵
