The moon rose above the pines , and for a moment I left my affairs behind and watched it.

It is remarkable how much of life is spent looking elsewhere. We imagine a future condition in which we shall finally possess what we lack, and so we hurry onward, measuring our days by what remains unfinished.

Yet while standing under the moon, I found myself thinking of ambitions long forgotten.

There was a time when I desired a place of my own, useful work, and the liberty to direct my days according to my own judgment. These seemed distant prospects then. They belonged to that vague concept we call the future.

What becomes of such aspirations when they are fulfilled?

Not, as one might suppose, a permanent feeling of triumph. Rather, they become as ordinary as the trees beyond the window or the road traveled each morning. We cease to admire them precisely because they are ours.

I suspect that many men spend their lives pursuing what they already possess, though under a different name.

The moon, meanwhile, continued its course without concern for any of it.

I’ve spent my life behind the chair, and somehow now I find myself cutting hair on Route 66 during its centennial year here in Flagstaff. There’s something poetic about that to me.
