3.Formaldehyde is an incredibly useful and common compound , it's a widely used preservative and fixative that's capable of holding amino groups in proteins together , so it works great in keratin treatments :

What is Formaldehyde?

Formaldehyde is a naturally occurring, simple chemical compound composed of hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. At room temperature formaldehyde is a colourless gas.

All organic life forms including bacteria, plants, fish, animals and humans, produce formaldehyde that is emitted at various low levels. Formaldehyde does not accumulate in the atmosphere because it is quickly broken down by sunlight, through a process called photo-oxidation. The human body is also able to quickly metabolise, or break down, formaldehyde so it does not accumulate in our bodies.

Because formaldehyde has many useful chemical properties, it is also manufactured industrially and serves as a key building block in a wide range of applications. Commercially manufactured formaldehyde is usually sold in liquid form as formalin, a solution that is most commonly 37% formaldehyde

Health & Safety

Like most chemicals, very high concentrations of formaldehyde can be toxic. However its natural presence in our bodies at low levels means that we have the right metabolic processes to ensure that it is broken down quickly and does not build up in the body.

Formaldehyde at high concentrations - over 1 part per million (ppm) - can cause some eye, nose or throat irritation in humans, however exposure to such levels is very rare. Studies on human volunteers at the University of Heidelberg showed no objective signs of irritation at exposure up to concentrations of 0.4 ppm, with peaks of 0.8 ppm, or concentrations of 0.7 ppm continuously. Average levels of indoor formaldehyde in Europe are usually between 0.02 ppm and 0.035 ppm (Salthammer 2012), which is about 10 times less than levels that show the first signs of irritation.

There have been numerous studies into the potential carcinogenic effects of formaldehyde. None have shown conclusive evidence that exposure to formaldehyde causes cancer at the workplace. Such workplace exposures are much higher than those encountered by the general population indoor or outdoor.
