Calico hair!

I don’t talk about this often, and to some of you, I’m sure it’s one of those over the top, leftist things to do, but to me, it’s important.

While doing hair, I often ask people move their heads. I have them look down, or tilt to the left or right. If they aren’t correctly positioned for what I need to do, I will ask them if it’s ok for me to move their head where I need them. In the same vein, when people are getting ready to leave, I often hug them (because once people know they absolutely can trust me, most color sessions are actually therapy for us both), but I only do so if I ask them if I can first.

Here’s why :

In any scenario where I need to touch someone outside of what is strictly necessary/bare bones of what I’m doing for work, I ask permission.

Some people are touch me nots by nature. Some people just don’t like being constrained (hugged).
Some people don’t like the feel of someone who isn’t in their immediate circle having their hands on them….
and some people of survivors of abu$e. Domestic, child, s€xual, emotional, psychological.

I ask permission to step into someone’s space. I ask if it’s ok to put my hands on their skin. I do so because so many people didn’t/haven’t/don’t have a choice. When they were touched against their will. Sometimes they’ve never had the opportunity to talk about that, or haven’t been comfortable enough yet to face it, or are still struggling with it.

My personality is a lot. I’m wild and excitable and chatty. I adore my job. I have a deep passion for life in general. All that being said, one thing that is important to me is giving people a choice. Be it friends, family, or business. Touch is so important, but some people just have boundaries, for whatever reason, and I insist that I respect them.

There have been many times that, when I’ve asked someone before they leave my shop if it’s ok to hug them, they’ve looked at me like I’m crazy and said ‘of course!’ It made them happy. Me too. However, I want those of you who aren’t comfortable with that sort of thing to know that I’m just as happy to respect that you aren’t ready for that sort of exuberance. If I ask to hug you, and you are not comfortable with that, or just don’t feel like it, tell me. I promise you that you won’t hurt my feelings or make me think any differently of you. Believe it or not, there are times I’m a touch me not too. 🖤

One of the most intense, difficult color corrections I’ve ever done (this isn’t recent). She had old vivids from somewhere else on the ends that had severely stained, old bleach, banding, some virgin hair, etc. She wanted opal hair, and that’s exactly she got! It was so so so beautiful. I LOVE a good challenge!
