HERB OF THE DAY!
ELDERBERRY🪻
Let's talk about it!
🌿 History of Elderberry
Elderberry comes primarily from species of the Sambucus genus, especially European black elder (Sambucus nigra). It has a long history in traditional food and herbal practices across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia.
🏺 Ancient History
Elder trees were valued by ancient European cultures for their berries, flowers, and other parts of the plant. Historical herbal traditions used elder preparations for a variety of everyday ailments, including colds, respiratory complaints, inflammation, and digestive problems.
The plant also developed a strong place in European folklore. Elder trees were sometimes regarded as protective plants and were associated with household and spiritual traditions.
🌿 Medieval Herbal Medicine
During the Middle Ages, European herbalists commonly used elder flowers and berries in traditional preparations. Elderflower was particularly popular in teas and other preparations, while elderberries were made into foods, wines, preserves, and medicinal syrups.
🍯 Elderberry Syrup
Over generations, people developed preparations such as elderberry syrup, often combining cooked elderberries with ingredients such as honey, ginger, or spices. These preparations were traditionally taken during the colder months.
🧪 Elderberry Today
Modern research has investigated elderberry primarily for its antioxidant compounds and possible effects on symptoms of respiratory infections.
P.S. Elderberry is one of my top 5 favorite herb! I have created my own handmade elderberry syrup with a herbal blend! I swear by the benefits, over the past 3 years this is all I give my daughter from an infant to now and she is 3 years old. She lovesss it lol. Definitely is great for boosting the immune system! ALFALFA LEAF💚
LET'S TALK ABOUT THE HISTORY!
Alfalfa leaf has a long history as both animal forage and a traditional medicinal plant. Alfalfa is scientifically known as Medicago sativa.
🌿 Ancient history
Origin: Alfalfa is believed to have originated in Central Asia, particularly around present-day Iran and surrounding regions.
Ancient Persia: It was cultivated thousands of years ago as a nutritious feed for horses and other livestock.
Ancient Greece and Rome: Alfalfa spread westward and became valued as a forage crop. The Romans recognized its usefulness for improving animal health and productivity.
🌱 Spread around the world
Alfalfa eventually traveled through Europe and into North Africa and Asia. During the 16th century, Spanish colonists brought it to the Americas, where it became an important livestock crop.
By the 19th and 20th centuries, alfalfa was widely cultivated in the United States and became one of the country's major hay and forage crops.
🍃 Alfalfa leaf as a traditional herb
The leaves and young shoots have also been used traditionally as food and herbal preparations. Various cultures used alfalfa preparations for purposes such as:
Supporting digestion
Providing vitamins and minerals
Supporting general nutrition
Traditional use for women's health and lactation
Alfalfa leaves contain nutrients including vitamin K, vitamin C, folate, minerals, chlorophyll, and plant compounds. However, traditional uses don't necessarily mean that a particular medicinal benefit has been scientifically established.
🔬 Modern use
Today, alfalfa is still primarily important as a high-protein forage crop for cattle, horses, sheep, and other animals. Alfalfa leaf is also sold as a human dietary supplement in forms such as dried leaf, powder, tablets, and tea.
One important caution: alfalfa contains vitamin K, which can interfere with the blood-thinning medication warfarin, and concentrated alfalfa supplements aren't appropriate for everyone.
