Summer is here, so let’s talk about the sun

We all are taught to stay out of the sun or lather ourselves in sunscreen head to toe while the sun is demonized as if it wasn’t created to sustain life.

I’m here to tell you the sun isn’t the problem. The sun helps regulate our circadian rhythm, supports healthy hormone production, boosts mood, aids metabolism, and provides the natural light signals our bodies need to function optimally.

Many people think of sunlight only in terms of vitamin D, but sunlight provides much more than that. Morning sunlight helps set our internal clock, signaling our bodies when to wake, eat, digest, and sleep. Consistent exposure to natural light has been linked to improved metabolic health, better energy production within our cells, and healthier sleep patterns. The sun also delivers near-infrared and red light wavelengths that may support cellular repair, circulation, and mitochondrial function. The sun uses the same wavelengths often used in expensive red-light therapy devices.

One of the best times to get sunlight is in the morning shortly after waking and again later in the evening as the sun begins to set. Morning light contains less intense UV exposure while providing powerful signals to regulate cortisol, melatonin, and your circadian rhythm. Evening sunlight helps signal to the body that nighttime is approaching, supporting healthy sleep and recovery. These lower-angle sun exposures also provide abundant red and near-infrared light, which may support skin health and cellular function.

Another fascinating aspect of sunlight is melanin. While melanin is often discussed only as the pigment responsible for skin color and tanning, it serves many important functions within the body. Melanin helps protect tissues from excessive UV damage, supports the body’s response to sunlight, and may contribute to how our bodies interact with and utilize light energy. Rather than viewing melanin simply as a defense mechanism, researchers are continuing to explore its broader role in overall health and cellular function.

A perspective that has gained attention recently comes from health educator Kori Meloy, who shares her personal experience of improving her melasma through a more balanced relationship with sunlight rather than complete avoidance. She discusses the idea that metabolic health, nutrient status, blood sugar regulation, and overall cellular function may influence how the skin responds to sun exposure. Her story highlights an important point: sometimes the solution isn’t simply avoiding the sun altogether, but supporting the body’s ability to interact with sunlight in a healthy way. While every person’s skin is different, her experience encourages us to consider the bigger picture of skin health rather than focusing solely on external factors.
Read her blog here (https://www.korimeloy.com/new-blog/i-healed-my-melasma-with-more-sun-not-less?mcp_token=eyJwaWQiOjQyMzEzNDIsInNpZCI6MTA2NDI4MTY2MiwiYXgiOiI4Yzk2NTAxOGU2MTQ4YmRhY2M3N2UyNTFhYWUzNTBmZCIsInRzIjoxNzgwMTExNDgwLCJleHAiOjE3ODI1MzA2ODB9.hqcOOPKbG0CwE-SWPwXGj6_Kg6Gt0z-eHT192QHS7aM&fbclid=PAVERFWASHOBNleHRuA2FlbQIxMABzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA8xMjQwMjQ1NzQyODc0MTQAAaeiTAmFqd1Dh9X8o5c7IOCUa4Np3vpP7RPm8aTfar7B5_4dw1T32Vc3FDsTKA_aem_o7kXIqDOdmTAh53FfCu7Ug)

The goal isn’t excessive sun exposure or sunburns, those are never beneficial. Instead, it’s about developing a healthy relationship with natural sunlight, spending time outdoors, supporting your metabolism with nutrient-dense foods, and allowing your body to receive the light signals it was designed to receive. Just as we need clean food, clean water, and quality sleep, we also need healthy exposure to natural light.

Let’s talk sun protection

When it comes to sun protection, I believe in a balanced approach. The body’s natural relationship with sunlight while being mindful of overexposure. Morning and late afternoon sun are ideal times to soak up the benefits of sunlight, including circadian rhythm support, metabolism regulation, and beneficial red and near-infrared light, while minimizing the intensity of midday UV exposure.

ā˜€ļø Osmosis Sun Defense Elixir
This unique supplement is designed to help the body better handle UV exposure from the inside out. It contains antioxidant-rich ingredients that help neutralize damage associated with sun exposure without blocking vitamin D production, making it a great option for those who want extra support while spending time outdoors.

ā˜€ļø Osmosis Sun Defense Bronzing Elixir
For those who love a sun-kissed glow, the Bronzing Elixir offers the same internal sun-support benefits while helping enhance your natural tan. It supports the skin’s response to UV exposure while promoting a healthy, radiant appearance.

ā˜€ļø CLEARSTEM YOUARESUNSHINE SPF 50
When topical protection is needed, this is one of my favorite options. It uses 21% non-nano zinc oxide for broad-spectrum mineral protection and is formulated to be acne-safe and non-comedogenic. It also contains skin-supportive ingredients like green tea, gotu kola, and horse chestnut to calm inflammation and support collagen health while protecting the skin.

The goal isn’t to fear the sun, It’s to build a healthy relationship with it. Get your morning sunshine, avoid burning, support your body from the inside out, and use topical protection strategically when exposure will be prolonged or intense. šŸŒžāœØ

Knowledge is powerful

This month, I had the incredible opportunity to spend two days in Colorado training in person with Dr. Ben Johnson, founder of Osmosis and one of the pioneers of holistic skin health. I now have my Master Holistic Skin Specialist certification, this advanced training allowed me to deepen my understanding of the connection between internal health and skin function, explore the latest research, and learn new ways to help clients achieve lasting results.

One of my favorite parts of the experience was being surrounded by like-minded practitioners who share the belief that true skin transformation happens when we address the body as a whole. We spent time diving into topics such as inflammation, gut health, detoxification pathways, aging, and advanced treatment protocols that go far beyond traditional skincare.

I am so grateful for every opportunity to continue my education and bring the most up-to-date knowledge back to my treatment room. Investing in ongoing training allows me to better serve my clients, and I can’t wait to implement everything I’ve learned to help you achieve healthier, more radiant skin from the inside out.

Something I can’t stop craving

Product spotlight: Shelter Skin

If you’re looking for a deeply nourishing moisturizer made with simple, skin-loving ingredients, Shelter Skin Body Butter is one of my favorites. Formulated with grass-fed beef tallow, this rich body butter provides vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with fatty acids that closely resemble those naturally found in our skin. This allows it to absorb beautifully, support the skin barrier, and leave skin feeling soft, hydrated, and healthy without synthetic fragrances or unnecessary fillers.

One of the things I love most about Shelter Skin is their commitment to sustainability. Once you’ve purchased your original jar, you can simply order a refill pouch to replenish your body butter. Not only does this save money over time, but it also helps reduce packaging waste and supports a more environmentally conscious skincare routine.

Whether you’re dealing with dry skin, wanting to support a healthy skin barrier, or simply looking for a cleaner alternative to conventional lotions, Shelter Skin Body Butter is a wonderful addition to your daily routine.

This isn’t your normal acne treatment šŸ‘šŸ¼

This client has NEVER laid on my table, I’ve NEVER touched her skin in a treatment, we did all of this internally!!

Acne isn’t a surface level issue it’s a toxin purge from somewhere in the body. This client was experiencing purging and congestion in her digestive zones with a targeted protocol we can stop active breakouts. Now we get to focus on healing the pigmentation and erythema left behind from active inflamed purging.

You too can reach TOTAL clearance for your skin through our customized skin mapping approach - schedule your virtual or in person consultations using the link in my bio or comment ā€œConsultā€ for an appointment.

My brain is on fire in the best wayšŸ”„

These past two days were nothing short of amazing. The attention to detail from everyone at osmosis is incredible, they truly are the best company in the world. Our goodie basket and yoga mats were absolutely above and beyond and I’m so so grateful for a company that spoils their estheticians🄰
Dr. Ben has a brain like no one else and Rene is so just unlike any educator I’ve ever had. Together they gave us so much knowledge, understanding, and empowerment to help our clients, family and friends navigate their wellness and skin journey. What we learned from these two is immeasurable, the side tangents Dr. Ben went on and all the funny insiders will stick with me forever. Everyone at osmosis is the best and I love being in their presence and picking everyone’s brain to help serve my community better. I met so many amazing estheticians and business owners who I am proud to call friends now! I wouldn’t want to be anywhere elsešŸ¤ā˜ŗļø
