In our love affair with saturated fats, I think we’ve forgotten some of the most beautiful fats for skin.

I love tallow—we render ours ourselves—but skin benefits from more than one kind of fat. Linoleic + oleic acids and the compounds found in beautiful whole plant oils have an important place in a balanced skin ritual, too.

That’s why Sunroot is built around carefully chosen, cold-processed, stable plant + fruit oils like camellia, meadowfoam, pomegranate + sea buckthorn. It gives skin a diversity of lipids while working beautifully as both a cleansing oil and a leave-on facial oil.

Your skin is a garden, and needs a balanced ecosystem to thrive. 🪴

I keep seeing the same pendulum swing.

Someone leaves conventional skincare behind, falls in love with “clean” or natural skincare… and then eventually decides it doesn’t work.

Their skin is still breaking out. It’s dry. Reactive. Congested. Maybe their dermatitis is worse.

So they swing all the way back.

But I think there’s a piece missing from this conversation:

Natural skincare isn’t simply about choosing natural ingredients. It’s about understanding the skin you’re putting them on.

Plants are powerful. Tallow is deeply nourishing. Essential oils have their place. Seed oils can offer incredible fatty acid diversity.

But more isn’t always better — and what beautifully supports the skin on your body may not be what an inflamed or acne-prone face needs.

I learned this as a student of my own skin long before it became the philosophy behind Sunbird.

The goal was never to make natural skincare less natural in order for it to work.

It was to get better at reading the skin.

To formulate thoughtfully. To protect the barrier. To know when to nourish, when to hydrate, and when to simply do less.

You don’t have to choose between clean and effective.

That space in between is exactly what we’re building at Sunbird. 🌿

This song became the anthem to my Summer mornings on our little Sunbird Prairie Co. farm we’ve been tending to since our move here in January. It’s been one of my deepest joys to grow our family, faith and our business out on this land. Each morning I am reminded of God’s faithfulness when I see the blooms overstretching the fence and all of the life it brings in. A daily reminder that it can be easy to forget at the end of a wilderness is a garden awaiting. 🌷

Next year we plan to expand our herb harvest so we can continue to make more one of a kind, farm to skin products for every single one of you. We have so many dreams of how we can bless others through this space, we know this is only the beginning. Thank you for supporting this dream.
