Keratin Pilaris (KP)
What Is It?
A skin condition when body hair clogs pores, blocking the opening of growing hair follicles. As a result, small bumps form over where hairs should be. Appears anywhere on the skin where hair follicles exist, common on the upper arms & thighs.
Why does it happen?
The exact cause of KP is unknown, but it’s thought to be connected to other skin conditions like atomic dermatitis & genetic conditions.
Who can develop it?
Common in women, children & teens, other mitigating factors include dry skin, eczema, & hormone changes such as puberty and pregnancy.
Most common in people with fair skin.
How is it treated?
There is no known cure & usually clears up with age.
A dermatologist may suggest some treatments that could alleviate the look of it such as moisturizing, scrubs & avoiding extreme temperatures. Never pick or squeeze them.
