Can you tell which collage is AI… and which one is real? 👀

Lately, I’ve been shocked by how many stylists and salons are using AI-generated or AI-refined images to advertise their work.

Sometimes the hair is completely fake. Other times, a real photo has been “enhanced” so much that it no longer represents what actually walked out of the salon.

As a stylist… I think that’s a problem.

Your hair is one of the biggest investments you’ll make in your appearance. You deserve to know what results are actually achievable, not what an algorithm thinks beautiful hair should look like.

So how can you tell?

✨ Hair that’s almost too perfect. Every strand falls flawlessly. Every highlight is identical. Real hair has texture, flyaways, and natural variation.

✨ The shadow stripe pattern. This is the giveaway I can’t unsee!! Many AI images have soft, repeating vertical or diagonal shadow bands running through the hair. It almost looks like a faint overlay rather than natural light reflecting off individual strands. Once you notice it, you’ll start seeing it everywhere.

✨ Airbrushed texture. Real hair has tiny shadows, different strand thicknesses, frizz, and movement. AI often smooths everything until it almost looks painted.

✨ Impossible shine and blending. Beautiful color should be seamless, but you should still see distinct ribbons of light and dimension. AI tends to blur everything into one silky gradient with an almost plastic-looking shine.

✨ Hair that doesn’t behave like hair. Watch for impossible density, overly full ends, or movement that just doesn’t follow gravity.

✨ Look beyond the hair. Hands, ears, jewelry, clothing, and backgrounds are often where AI starts making mistakes.

Our portfolios are our reputation.

Using AI to brainstorm ideas or create mood boards is one thing. Using AI to alter your finished work until it no longer represents what your client actually looked like is another.

It creates unrealistic expectations for clients, devalues the artistry of our industry, and erodes trust. Our profession is built on results, NOT renderings.

I’d rather show beautiful, imperfect, real hair every single time.

Because that’s what you’ll actually leave my chair with. 😊
