I can’t believe I’m writing this from the Crow’s Nest in the caboose on our family homestead! We are weeks away from making the move out here and I cannot wait for y’all to see it! If you haven’t heard already, Hare & Crow is moving out to our family property just a couple miles north of downtown. Here’s the kicker: we’re restoring this incredible early 1900’s caboose and thanks to Johnny Walker of local legend—and a break in the rain—it has found its final resting place. I'll be out of the shop from Friday, June 19 - Thursday, June 25 for a short summer break & birthday celebration with the family. I'll be back at it next Friday, June 26. Hope y'all have a great Father's Day weekend! Show those Dad's out there how much you love them!! See you soon.

P.s. I had the joy of meeting Steve Ozone yesterday. He stopped in for a haircut while visiting Fort Scott for a very cool photography project. It was a privilege to have my photo taken by him! I can't wait to see the work that comes out of his trip to our neck of the woods! Thanks for stopping in Steve!

Y’all have questions…

After my last post, I’ve been fielding quite a few queries and concerns. So, I figured I’d better answer them. I’ll start with the most important:

Is Hare & Crow closing? NO. We will be moving the barbershop out to our family farm just a couple miles north of town. But not right away…

When are you moving? We will stay right where we’re at until the new shop is built out and ready. It should be a seamless transition.

Not really a question, but I had a few folks congratulated me on my retirement. NOPE. I honestly don’t think I could ever really retire. Lord willing, I’ll be cutting hair for many years to come. I’m only 41 after all.

Now, back to my daydreaming with the door open on this beautiful day! I’ve got some plans to work out for the new shop…

You may have heard already—— small town life, am I right?—— we have some news for you…

After nearly 6 years, we have sold our building. That said, Hare & Crow and Branch Coffee aren’t going anywhere right away. We are working on plans to build what I am lovingly referring to as the Barber Cabin on our family place just a few minutes north of downtown Fort Scott. Branch Coffee will remain here for the foreseeable future.

There are several reasons for the move and I’ll share more as things progress. For now, the most important reason is that I find myself torn between two very different facets of the same life. I am, first and foremost, a husband, father and agrarian (read homesteader/farmer). I long to be on our home place with my family. At the same time, I thoroughly enjoy the work I do in town as a barber and truly believe it is a gift to share the joy of doing good work for and among my friends and neighbors. I can’t imagine putting one aside for the other, but I also know I can’t do either as well as I’d like to if the two are so divided. So, I am bringing the barbershop home. We’d love to have you over to sit for a spell and get your ears lowered. Who knows, you may find yourself enchanted by our contrarian life on the land and stay to sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and watch the cows graze while the sun drifts westward.

The barbershop will be closed Thursday, February 26 for a family birthday celebration. But have no fear, the branch coffee bar will be open for your daily coffee fix. Come say hi to a Ken.
