Yesterday, I went to the beach with my family.

It was beautiful. The kind of beautiful that makes you stop and remember how lucky you are to live near turquoise water and white sand.

We packed the cooler, made food, loaded the chairs, set the alarms, and left early to avoid the worst of the Florida heat.

For a while, it was exactly what I needed.

Peace. Waves. My family fishing. The beach I love.

But cancer changes what a “good day” costs.

The sun felt hotter than it used to. The walk through the sand took more out of me than I expected. The beach got crowded, loud, and overwhelming. I stayed longer than I should have because my family was having such a good time, and I did not want to be the reason we left early.

By the time we packed up, walked back through the thick sand, rinsed off, changed in hot bathrooms with no air, and drove an hour and a half home, I was completely drained.

Then last night, I barely slept.

This morning, I woke up feeling like I had been hit by a truck. My neck, shoulders, back, hip, and foot all hurt. My body feels heavy. My energy is gone. I feel decades older than I am. And I cried because before cancer, a day like that would not have taken this much from me.

That is one of the realities of survivorship.

People see the beach pictures. The family memories. The proof that you are out living life again.

They do not always see the price you pay afterward.

Sometimes one good day costs you the next one.

And as grateful as I am to still be here, I hate that cancer changed the way my body recovers from joy.
