The Keepers of Dhofar Frankincense Trees - 2
The riches of the Frankincense Trail begins in the Dhofar Mountain Region in present-day southwest Oman. This crescent-shaped mountain range provides the perfect growing conditions for wild frankincense trees. From June to August every year the monsoon clouds cover the Dhofar Mountains bringing consistent daily rain. The Dhofar hills turn green with growing grasses, flowers, shrubs, and trees. The clouds reach just a couple miles past the top of the Dhofar Mountain ridge into the dry, high deserts. Frankincense trees thrive at this edge of the monsoon clouds.
Over 5000 years ago these frankincense trees were discovered by 3 special tribes of wandering people. They may have discovered Dhofar during the monsoon season when the hills and mountains are green with vegetation. Who were these people who decided to stay in the crescent-shape Dhofar Mountains?
Today these people live in mountain villages and roam the high deserts are known as “mountain people”, but they refer to themselves as belonging to one of the Shahra tribes. The Dhofar region was originally settled by 3 Shahra tribes – 3 brothers known as Uzal, Ophir, and Jerah. These 3 brothers were some of the sons of Joktan. This is where it becomes interesting. Joktan, was a great-great-great grandson of the Prophet Noah (Noah – Shem – Arphaxad – Salah – Eber – Joktan). Joktan had a total of 13 sons who inherited the south Arabian coastal lands from the Red Sea on the west (present day Yemen) to the Dhofar Range on the east (present day western Oman).
Joktan had 10 sons who settled in present-day Yemen. These sons were the origins of the tribes of Almodad, Sheleph, Hadoram, Diklah, Obal, Abimael, Havilah, Jobab, Sheba, and Hazarmuveth (Hadramaut). The famed Queen of Sheba came from the Sheba tribe - the tribe that seemed to dominate frankincense trade. The Hadramaut tribe settled closest to the three Shahra tribes and were also famed for their abundant frankincense gum-resin collecting. The Frankincense Camel Caravan Trail beginning in the Oman’s Dhofar Mountains passes through the 10 tribal regions in present-day Yemen on its way to the delivering frankincense to the rich northern kingdoms.
The three original Shahra tribes (Uzal, Ophir, and Jerah) eventually split into 13 tribes, then into 48 total subtribes. The 13 Shahra tribes of Dhofar continue to claim the sole right of harvesting gum-resin from their wild frankincense trees. They are the keepers and protectors of frankincense.
Each tribe claims tribal lands that reach from the Arabian Sea on the south, over the Dhofar Mountain, into the high deserts, and extending down to the Empty Quarter sand dunes to the north. Shahra men in each tribe hold the right to harvest frankincense oleogum-resin within their tribal boundaries. These frankincense harvesting rights are still in effect today.
There are approximately 50,000 Shahra people living in western Oman. They speak an unwritten language called Shahri. Every Shahra child learns to speak Shahri and the Shahra culture in their modest home. When they enter public schools they are taught the Arabic language and the Muslim religion.
The Shahra people living in the mountains of Dhofar are the protectors of the wild frankincense trees. They hold the 5000-year-old right to harvest and trade frankincense oleogum-resin. This is your source of sacra frankincense essential oil. So what about the poisonous flying snakes? It’s coming, be patient.

Can’t wait to hear more about Frankincense and the flying snakes of Dhofar!!
A Curious Rock Petroglyph tells the Frankincense Story - 1
I have a few seldom-heard stories about frankincense that I’d like to share with you. We all love the aroma of frankincense essential oil. This essential oil has a unique history. You’ll want to read and share this unique series about frankincense.
These stories begin with the “mountain people” living on the southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula – a region called Dhofar. These are the native tribes who for the past 5000 years have had the right to harvest frankincense gum. There’s another story about the camel caravans that transported frankincense gum from Oman to rich northern kingdoms (Egypt, Israel, Greece, Rome, India, China, Persia, Syria). I have another story about how the “mountain people” preserved the frankincense trees in the Dhofar Mountains. This rock petroglyph found along the frankincense camel caravan trail in Oman could tell you all of these stories…if you would listen.
This rock petroglyph depicts two distinct images. The main image is snake in motion. The other image is less obvious. The simple curved, vertical line represents a wing. Yes, a wing. This iconic rock petroglyph depicts a winged serpent – a poisonous winged serpent or poisonous flying snake. The story behind this poisonous winged serpent in the Dhofar Mountains was as important to the ancient frankincense empires as Windows software was to the success of Microsoft, as important as Steve Jobs was to Apple, as important as peanut butter is to jelly.
I could tell you the short story version of the poisonous flying snakes of the Dhofar Mountains and the role they played in the building frankincense empires. However, if I told the short version, you’d never know the “untold stories” about this marvelous frankincense region. So I’ve decided to share these stories every weekend for your reading pleasure.
When I’m finished with these stories you will have a greater appreciation for frankincense essential oil and the people who make it happen. Thank you Chrisie for encouraging me to share this photo and these stories.

Although Peppermint, Lavender, and Lemon aren't specifically mentioned in the Bible, many essential oils are mentioned and they DO come from the leaves of the trees (or plants) and have always been known to have medicinal properties.
Again in Revelations 22:2, the Bible says: "... And the leaves of the trees are for the healing of the nations". Why are we so quick (especially as believers) to dismiss the power of natural alternatives when God himself put them there for us?

What's so special about Frankincense? It is mentioned 22 times directly in the Bible and 59 times indirectly... That's 81 times! I wonder if we ought to pay more attention to something when it's mentioned in the Bible so many times.
It is used to anoint the sons of kings & priests... No wonder it was given to Jesus. But the properties of this oil, while gentle enough for a babies skin, has more properties to support our body that we can even fathom... Sort of a Swiss Army knife of oils. It's one of my favorites! It's aroma is heavenly!

I have spent some time gathering local Fort Worth Restaurants into one happy place. Do yourself a favor and copy this list and somehow get it into the "notes" app on your phone, so you have it accessible whenever you need a fresh idea of where to dine. When things get "spicy" in the Bible.
Solomon Admires his Beloved in Song of Solomon 4:14... "Your shoots are an orchard of pomegranates... With cinnamon... Garden steams and flowing rivers...l" oh my.
Proverbs 7:17 "I have sprinkled my bed with myrrh, aloes (sandalwood), and cinnamon l. Come, let us drink our fill of love until morning..." Need I say more?
Exodus 30:23 Cinnamon is referred to as one of the finest of spices for a holy anointing oil.
Cinnamon is one of the highest oils on the ORAC scale (antioxidant). It has extremely powerful medicinal properties. Supports cardiovascular & digestive systems, as well as protects body against harmful environmental invaders.
