4C hair is strong, but it’s also the most fragile curl type because of its tight coils and natural dryness. A lot of breakage comes from everyday habits that seem harmless but slowly weaken the strands. Here are some of the biggest mistakes people make:
1. Handling it dry too often
4C hair needs moisture to stay flexible. Detangling, styling, or even just fluffing it while dry can cause snapping because the strands don’t have enough elasticity. Water (or a water-based leave-in) is your best friend.
1. Skipping regular detangling
Letting hair stay tangled for too long leads to knots that turn into breakage later. The mistake isn’t detangling it’s waiting too long and then rushing through it aggressively.
1. Using the wrong tools or technique
Fine-tooth combs, ripping through with brushes, or starting detangling from the roots down instead of ends up = unnecessary breakage. 4C hair responds better to gentle, section-by-section detangling.
1. Not sealing in moisture
Moisturizing without sealing (with oils or creams) is like pouring water into a cup with holes. The moisture evaporates quickly, leaving hair dry and brittle again.
1. Over-manipulation
Constant restyling, daily slick backs, tight buns, or redoing edges puts stress on strands especially around the hairline. Even ā€œprotectiveā€ styles can cause damage if they’re too tight or redone too often.
