Do collagen supplements really help your skin?

A recent review highlighted by the American Academy of Dermatology looked at 35 randomized controlled trials of oral collagen peptides.

The takeaway? Collagen may help, but it’s important to have realistic expectations.

💧 Skin hydration: The most consistent benefit, with improvement seen as early as 4 weeks
✨ Skin elasticity & barrier function: May improve, with benefits becoming more noticeable around 12 weeks
🧴 Skin texture/roughness: Some improvement was seen
⏳ Wrinkles: The evidence was not convincing for meaningful wrinkle reduction
🔬 Dermal density: No strong evidence of true structural improvement

Interestingly, how long collagen was taken seemed to matter more than the dose.

My takeaway as a dermatologist: Oral collagen peptides may be a reasonable addition if your goal is improved hydration and overall skin quality, but think of them as a supplement to, not a replacement for, sunscreen, retinoids and other proven skin-aging treatments.
