So you just saw I posted today beautiful bride and after seeing yesterday’s post about me having emergency surgery you’re probably confused. Don’t worry I’m actually fully in shock too. How did I have surgery yesterday and do 6 peoples makeup today.

Yesterday knowing what was happening while drugged up I started texting to get help for today. I couldn’t leave a bride hanging on her wedding day even if I was having surgery. So my bestie Stephanie came and picked me up driving the pink mobile. She then helped do all the things I would normally do but couldn’t, even wearing my belt for me. Kaitlyn Aurilio one of my other besties was the planner and kept checking on me even arriving early to make sure I got in ok. And Jimmy Ho Photography was the photographer who I’ve worked with for years. So this amazing team of people allowed me to still deliver for my bride and do makeup for 6 people after having surgery yesterday. I beyond adore them.

So if you’ve notice I was MIA posting this week and there was a reason. It was supposed to be a fun reason but ended up taking a turn.

My girlfriend and I had planned a fun 4 day family vacation with her son and his girlfriend. Saturday I was driving to south Florida to pick him up at the airport when I had to detour to an urgent care because I was so sick. They told me it was a UTI and gave me a med. This confused because it didn’t seem like a UTI. By the last day of trip I was in a wheelchair and meds had clearly not worked. I’d been struggling every day, not able to eat, not sleeping and in pain but I was determined and assumed I was on the mend. Yesterday morning I took my last pill in Orlando and drove straight my dr. She said I had kidney stones, got me new scripts and said if it got worse I needed to immediately go to the ER. Well at 1:30am it got worse. I was then sent to the hospital and ended up have surgery today removing two kidney stones one of which was large and my kidney function was at that of an 80 year old. I’m home now and on the med. This has been crazy!!!

So how did I become a makeup artist? It wasn’t the expected path. I mean it was never my plan. Several things fell into place but this is how it started:

Many moons ago back in 2007 I auditioned for a small independent filming being filmed in town. I was cast and in 2008 we filmed. My role basically was to scream and die. I was in my 20s and screaming and dying tended to be how I was cast.

When I showed up to filming the artist had products I was allergic too. Being used to often being allergic to products I brought my own makeup and asked if I could do it myself which production was fine with. Being that it was a small crew and we filmed really fast with a small budget the makeup artist for the standard makeup was no longer on set a before we finished filming. The director asked if I could jump in and help the other actors with their makeup. Not even thinking about it I said yes. I was already jumping in to help where ever I could.

Little did I know that getting cast in this little film would lead to me being referred a year later to my first official job as a makeup artist and snowball me into a career. I had learned years before the importance of saying yes and jumping in but I had no idea how this and couple more things would lineup and change my life for ever.

Ps an amazing FX artist Nenie Walker slit my throat for this film. I still refer her when people ask for FX makeup because that’s not my area.

Makeup in the mirror and makeup on camera do not read the same way. When you are going on camera it’s important to work with an artist that understands how the camera and lighting can impact how your makeup reads.

I have an extreme knowledge of all of that. I spent a decade working for a cosmetics company that sold their products on HSN. I was both a model for the brand and a makeup artist for the brand. I had to go on live TV with no makeup on and build my face on live TV as well get our guests ready to go on air. If it wasn’t done well to be viewed on TV the product didn’t sell and well it was all about the sales. We were even airing when everything switched to HD and had to know how to make the makeup still look amazing.
