After years of providing therapy I've had countless clients say things like "go as hard as you want" or "you can't hurt me" referring to the amount of pressure during the massage. The truth is that one can get better results by not forcing pressure upon the tissue. One of the functions of our fascia (the tissue that surrounds each muscle and muscle cell) is to protect us. When pain is present the muscles in our bodies contract which can result in chronic pain or limited range of motion. So when pressure is applied to the point of pain then massage is not achieving the results intended, relaxation! Contrary to some beliefs regarding massage, one does not need feel sore the next day to get results. In fact, lasting relief or relaxation of muscles, the nervous system, etc... can be achieved without pain or soreness the next day. One can leave a massage and feel good and continue to feel good well into the next several days, weeks, months, or even years. With all that said, I've not met a massage therapist, or attended any training with the goal of "hurting" someone. That's not what I'm in it for, I intend to help people feel good in their bodies and minds.
