On the first day of school, Ashley Miller received one simple instruction. Stay inside. Her daughter, Madelyn, a 10th grader in Farmington, New York, made her position clear: No parents would appear at the bus stop. “I was not to be outside because it’s embarrassing,” Miller, 42, tells TODAY.com. So, at about 7 a.m., Miller, a pediatric emergency room nurse, remained hidden indoors. Her husband, Jason, was upstairs, secretly filming Madelyn and their son, Parker, a seventh grader, as they prepared to board the bus on their first day of school. Then Finley intervened. Finley is a 1-year-old golden retriever, which means he possesses many of the qualities traditionally associated with golden retrievers: enthusiasm, optimism, and an abiding belief that everyone is his pal.
