Meet Dena McDonald

This week, we’re introducing the women who will be joining us at the table for the She Leads NC Launch Party on October 30.

Dena McDonald is the founder of Choose Local & Small Y'all (CLASY), owner of Alossi Renewal Spa and, at heart, a connector, problem solver and advocate for people who deserve to be seen and heard.

Her roots are in social work and nursing, two careers that taught her how to understand people, meet them where they are and step in when something needs to be done.

CLASY began with what Dena describes as a little bit of defiance. During COVID, she watched independent small businesses struggle and felt that no one was really fighting for them. What started as a way to help grew into a statewide movement advocating for the smallest independent businesses, especially those too often overlooked because they don’t hold the money or power.

Dena says she has a habit of stepping into things she may not feel qualified to do simply because she believes they need to be done. Her faith has taught her that God doesn’t always call the qualified; sometimes He qualifies the called.

Coming from what she describes as “a long line of badass women,” Dena was never taught to see being a woman as a liability. She sees it as a superpower. She believes in leading through service, doing things a little differently and refusing to shrink just because you aren’t sure you’re ready.

Sometimes, she says, you have to believe in yourself, do it anyway and be willing to cause a little good trouble along the way.

We’re excited to welcome Dena to the table.
