🧏🏻‍♀️September is Deaf Awareness Month!🦻
For anyone who doesn’t personally know me, you might find it interesting to learn that I’m newly Hard of Hearing & proudly wear hearing aids. Unless I specifically point out my hearing aids/tell you about my hearing troubles, you’d probably never guess that I’m HoH.

You’re probably thinking, “Okay, you have hearing aids, big whoop?”
Yes, but the DRAMAAA😩 There are SO. MANY. PEOPLE. who struggle to accept their hearing loss/absolutely refuse to wear hearing aids because they think people might look at them differently or “hearing aids are for old people.”
🪄I want to be an example for anyone with those internal struggles; I wear my brightly colored hair, funky wardrobe, & now I flaunt my hearing aids.
What others think does👏not👏matter👏

People with varying degrees of hearing loss are just like you. There’s nothing obscure about them, they aren’t another species, treat them like any other human, ya silly goose🥸

Oh ALSO, gradually losing my hearing has encouraged me to further my use of American Sign Language, which means that I’m able to provide services to clients who might not otherwise be able to go to the salon without someone accompanying them as an interpreter🥳
They can have that 1-on-1 time with me and have my undivided attention as we create the look of their dreams (and maybe gossip & eat snacks, idk)✨

Long story short–we gotta reduce the stigma around hearing aids, adjust how we support/interact with d/Deaf people, & we should all be learning sign language. Kthanksbye🤟
