I don’t ask what you want first.

I ask what you hate.

Here’s why: “what do you want” almost always gets me an inspo picture— and inspo pictures are genuinely useful. But they’re a starting point, not the answer. That picture is someone else’s face, someone else’s tone, someone else’s hair. My job in the consultation is to break it down— what do you actually love about it, what would you never want on you, what have you tried before that you couldn’t stand.

That’s the information that tells me what to actually do. To brassy last time? Faded flat within weeks? Doesn’t feel like you anymore, even though it “matched the picture”? That’s not small talk. That’s the work.

So next time your color only asks what you want— that’s worth noticing.

What do you always love, no matter what.
What you want people to notice — which is almost never what you think you’re asking for.
What’s been done to it before, because history doesn’t lie even when guests do.
And the real first question: what are you afraid of.

Get those answers right and the formula picks itself. Foils, gloss, correction — that’s just paperwork. Skip this part and you get a very expensive apology in six weeks.

I used to think becoming a great hairstylist, meant learning enough formulas, techniques, and rules that eventually I’d always know exactly what to do.

So I learned. And I learned. And I learned.

But the more real hair I did— especially complicated color and corrections— the more obvious it became that real hair doesn’t follow recipes. The same formula doesn’t behave the same way on every canvas. The technique that worked perfectly yesterday doesn’t automatically belong on the person sitting in front of me today. And sometimes everything goes exactly according to plan…. And the hair still says, absolutely fckn not.

For a long time, I thought the answer was learning more. Another formula. Another technique. Another class. Another person telling me exactly what to do.

Until I realized I was solving the wrong problem. I didn’t need someone to give me more answers. I needed to understand WHY well enough to find my own.

That changed the way I do hair.

Now, before I ask what, I Ask why. Why this placement? Why this formula? Why the depth? Why this tone? Why does she love that inspiration picture? Why isn’t this hair behaving the way that I expected?

And ironically, the moment I stopped believing an expert, was someone who always knew the answer was when I finally started feeling like one.

Because expertise isn’t memorizing enough answers. It’s understand, understanding your craft deeply enough to know what to do when the answer you memorized doesn’t work.

And that’s the kind of hair stylist— an educator— I want to be.

Everyone’s hair fades a little warm. That’s just science. Hers was fading SUPER warm, and nothing about that made sense.

Over a year of sessions grey-blending her out of permanent red. I went through everything— products, heat styling, checked for well water, tried different color lines. Nothing fully explained it. So we added a shower filter, even though she didn’t have well water. That was the fix. 180 difference.
