Now that summer is here, I’m seeing more teens for the most common skin concern of all… acne… which is perfect timing as June is acne awareness month.

If you know my story, you know acne holds a special place in my heart. Helping teens and adults regain confidence in their skin is one of my favorite parts of what I do.

Did you know acne affects up to 85% of teenagers?

The biggest misconception I see is that all acne is the same. It’s not.

Different types of acne have different causes, which means treatment shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all either. Every teen has a unique skin type, lifestyle, hormonal profile, and response to products and treatments.

And those TikTok skincare trends your teen is trying? 🙈 Most are doing far more harm than good (and honestly… they aren’t great for moms either).

Here’s a quick guide to the most common types of acne:

⚪️ Whiteheads
Closed pores filled with oil and dead skin cells.
Common causes: Hormones, excess oil production, clogged pores.
Helpful treatments: Salicylic acid, gentle exfoliation, professional acne facials.

⚫️ Blackheads
Open pores that become dark when oil oxidizes.
Common causes: Excess oil and congestion.
Helpful treatments: Salicylic acid, retinoids, and professional extractions.

🔴 Papules
Small red, inflamed bumps without a visible white center.
Common causes: Inflammation and acne-causing bacteria.

Common causes: Bacteria and inflammation.

🟠 Nodules

Common causes: Severe inflammation deep within the pore.
Helpful treatments: Early professional intervention to prevent scarring.

🟤 Cystic Acne
Deep, painful cysts that often leave long-term scars.
Common causes: Hormones, genetics, and significant inflammation.

Not all filler is created equal and that’s actually a good thing 🥸

Different fillers are designed for different anatomy, movement, thickness, structure, and goals. Some fillers are soft and flexible for natural movement, while others are thicker and more supportive for contour and structure.

A few examples:
• Softer/thinner fillers are often preferred for lips, fine lines, or very natural hydration and movement
• Medium-density fillers can help with balance, contour, and soft volume
• Thicker/more structural fillers are commonly used in areas like cheeks, chin, jawline, or deeper support

This is why choosing the right filler matters just as much as choosing the right injector.

And when it comes to lips specifically ☝🏻 more is not always better

Some clients prefer starting with 1/2 syringe for subtle hydration, shape, and balance while most prefer a full syringe for more noticeable volume and definition (but not overdone and unnatural).

Often the best outcomes happen gradually..
Start conservative, allow swelling to heal, assess shape and movement, build slowly over time if desired.

This approach helps maintain:
• Natural proportions
• Tissue integrity
• Better filler integration
• More customized results

Everyone’s anatomy is different:
Lip size, tissue thickness, asymmetry, muscle movement, facial balance, and even previous filler history all play a role in creating a treatment plan.

ALSO if I suggest you dissolve your lips prior to me working on you, it’s because it truly is in your best interest to receive the best possible results.
