There's a specific quality to Grand Rapids at the end of August. The light comes in lower in the evenings. The farmers market is at its absolute best. Everyone is trying to get one more thing in before the school year swallows the calendar.

I love this stretch. I also know it's when a lot of people quietly run themselves down.

If you're local and looking for a genuinely good way to spend a late-summer afternoon before things get busy: the market, a walk somewhere with actual trees, and no plan after it.

Where's your favorite spot in GR to slow down? Always looking for new ones.

Last few days for the August offer: $15 off any 90-minute massage, through Monday the 31st.

If September is already looking full, this is a good weekend to get something on the calendar for yourself before it disappears.

Low back soreness after a weekend outside is one of the most common things I hear in August.

The issue is almost always how long you stayed in one shape, not the shape itself.

So the things that help are mostly about variety:
1️⃣ Change positions before you're uncomfortable, not after.
2️⃣ Kneel, then squat, then stand. Mix in your hips and legs so the same tissue isn't doing all the work for two hours.
3️⃣ Move afterward. A short walk is better for a tired back than sitting straight down.

And if it's already settled in and nothing is helping, that's a reasonable time to come see me.

Tension that's built up over weeks usually needs more than the last fifteen minutes of a session — which is part of why I'm running the 90-minute offer this month.

A few hours in a car doesn't sound like it should hurt. You're sitting down. You're not doing anything.

But driving asks your body to hold one shape for a long time, and to keep doing a few small things while it does.

Your head sits slightly forward of your shoulders, so the muscles at the back of your neck are quietly working the whole drive.
Your arms are held out in front of you, which keeps your chest shortened and your upper back loaded.

Your legs stay in more or less one position, doing small repetitive work.

And you almost never change any of it.
It isn't really the driving. It's the sameness. Muscles tolerate variety far better than they tolerate stillness — which is why the same position that's fine for twenty minutes is uncomfortable at hour three.

On a long drive, stopping every ninety minutes to walk for five does more than you'd expect. And if you're already past that point and it has settled in, that's exactly the kind of thing a longer session has room to work through properly.

Save this before your next trip.

Halfway through August, which means there's still plenty of month left to use this.
$15 off any 90-minute massage through the 31st.

If you've been meaning to book and haven't yet, this is the nudge. The last week of the month is usually my busiest, so the earlier you get on the calendar the more choice you have.

Anyone else have a complicated relationship with August?

There's a part of me that wants to squeeze everything out of it… say yes to the last camping trip, the last lake day, the last long evening outside.

And there's another part that's already tired and would like to sit down.

I don't think I'm alone in that. A lot of people I work on this time of year are running on the same mix of not-done-yet and worn-out.

What I've learned, mostly the hard way, is that rest isn't the thing you do after you've finished everything. If it were, none of us would ever rest.

So this is your reminder (and mine) that you're allowed to take care of yourself in the middle of a busy season, not just at the end of it.

How's your August going, honestly?

Most people don't book a massage in August because something happened. They book because a lot of small things did.

Four hours in the car with your shoulders creeping toward your ears.
A weekend of yard work in positions you never use the rest of the year.
Sleeping on an air mattress.
Carrying a kid on one hip all afternoon. Sitting on the ground at a bonfire.

None of those are injuries. Individually, none of them are even worth mentioning.

But your body adapts to whatever you ask of it most often, and by late summer it has been asked to do a lot of unfamiliar things in a short stretch of time. That's usually what's showing up as stiffness getting out of bed, or a neck that doesn't turn quite as far as it did in May.

Accumulated tension tends to respond well to being addressed directly. It just needs someone to spend real time on it.

What did your summer ask of your body this year? I'd like to hear.

August has a particular feeling to it. Summer isn't over, but you can sense it starting to wind down — and somewhere in all the travel, the yard work, the long weekends and the packed calendars, your body has been quietly keeping score.

This month at Moss Massage is about giving it somewhere to put all of that down.

All August: $15 off any 90-minute massage.

Ninety minutes isn't just a longer version of sixty. It's the difference between working on the spot that hurts and having enough time to get to why it hurts — the hips that have been driving all summer, the shoulders that carried the cooler, the low back that dug the garden beds.

No rushing at the end. No watching the clock.

One of my favorite things about summer is hearing everyone's stories.

The first camping trip.

The garden that's finally blooming.

A spontaneous aurora chasing trip.

The evening walks that turn into two-hour conversations.

If I can help your body feel good enough to wase through and enjoy more of those moments, I've done my job. 💕
