The DIY bucket mosquito trap operates on the principals that it will give off CO2 to attract adult mosquitos to lay their eggs in the bucket, and the mosquito dunk will kill the hatched mosquito larvae which can only survive in an aquatic environment. Let’s get into it: The mosquito dunks use a natural soil borne bacterium, Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies israeliensis) which is ingested by the larvae in the water and soon after kills them with no effect on anything else. The garden and grass clippings will start decomposing in the water which will release CO2. The information I read recommended adding the garden clippings to the bucket of water and letting it sit in the sun for a few days, which I did with my first bucket. Second bucket I just decided to add the mosquito dunk at the same time as the clippings and water. Dunks typically last 30 days and are approved for use in organic production. You can use these dunks in any standing water like rain barrels, bird baths, tree holes, planter reservoirs, rain gutters, etc. I have them in our rain barrels, and in my Vego self watering planters on my deck. Adult female mosquitos (the only ones that feed on blood) can live up to 5 months with an average life span of 6 weeks. I am hoping that with enough of these bucket traps (i want to make 2 more) I can reduce the mosquito population in my yard to a more manageable and enjoyable level. The last few days have been a whirlwind..

I received news that my father is very ill. For those that didn’t know, he lives in Greece. I was put in an impossible position to have to leave asap to spend some time with him, as well as help get his affairs in order. This is hard in so many ways. Running a solo business and having to rearrange 29 hair appointments was overwhelming to say the least. However, leaving my family for an extended period of time is something I have never done before. I am so happy to be able to spend some quality time with my dad but under these circumstances isn’t how I imagined it.

I will be out of town from 6/3 to 6/17. I will not be 100% accessible during this time. Please bear with me while I navigate this situation. I will be back at work on 6/18.

Thank you to all of my sweet clients for being so understanding and rearranging your schedules to accommodate my needs. I hate having to do that to you. This is something I knew would eventually happen but never did I think it would be so soon.
