last night, we had the privilege of celebrating and supporting the benedict center, an organization near and dear to our hearts 💜🦋

addressing the conditions that exist before someone ever enters the criminal justice system such as poverty, addiction, trauma, housing instability, lack of education, and lack of opportunity are imperative to creating safer communities and reducing crimes. ensuring that people have access to treatment, employment, housing, education, community, accountability, resources, and dignity solves problems before they exist.

you cannot talk about breaking cycles without being willing to address the conditions that created those cycles in the first place. you cannot demand rehabilitation and then refuse to allow people access to the tools they need to actually be rehabilitated.

our family knows firsthand that a person’s life is far greater than the worst decision they have ever made. second chances are not about pretending harm wasn’t caused or that terrible mistakes weren’t made. they are about recognizing that accountability and humanity can, and should, coexist. accountability should create the opportunity for change, not eliminate someone’s right to a future. as a society, we still have so much work to do. believing that someone who has should continue serving a social sentence AFTER their legal one has ended feeds the cycle and conditions that leads people to crime in the first place.

we need organizations like the benedict center willing to advocate for those impacted by the criminal justice system, provide meaningful resources and pathways forward, and educate those of us outside of the system about the realities faced by those within it. if we genuinely want safer communities, we have to care about what happens before someone enters the system, while they are in it, and after they come home.

if you’ve been around for a while, you’ve probably noticed i’ve been evolving into someone who does a hell of a lot more than just hair.

lilac moon grew into hair, education, astrology, reiki, community work, advocacy, speaking, and about 47 other ideas that my brain refuses to let go of🤣

instead of trying to keep squeezing everything under one roof, i finally decided to give each part of my work the space it deserves.

this feels less like starting over and more like finally making everything make sense.

here’s to bigger dreams, better (?) organization, lots more “wait…what if i…“ moments and probably another color coded spreadsheet i’ll ignore in three days. 🫶🏻
