HISTORIC TREE STONES: This week, the Indiana DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology is highlighting tree stones, a type of grave marker carved to resemble tree stumps. Tree stones were most popular in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and are usually constructed of limestone, marble, or granite.

Located in English Cemetery in Crawford County, this tree stone commemorates Dr. W. A. Cole (1854-1893). Another example of the influence of rusticism, this tree stone features natural elements of carved ferns, calla lilies, and ivy, symbols of remembrance, eternity, and life after death. The epitaph is noteworthy in that it is designed to appear as if the bark has been peeled back and the inscription carved into the wood beneath.

English Cemetery is surveyed in the Indiana Historical Sites and Structures Survey (IHSSI 025-191-11012) and the Cemetery and Burial Ground Registry (CR 13-71). To learn more, explore the State Historic Architectural and Archaeological Research Database (SHAARD): on.IN.gov/shaard.
