We sat down with one of the world's leading whole body cryotherapy (WBC) researchers to get answers to the industry's most popular questions.

Prof. Benoit Dugue has been studying cold adaptation for over 30 years. He's the founder and president of the WBC working group which is connecting all of the researchers in the field, facilitating scientific collaborations, and creating technical summaries for the industry since 2017. He does not sell anything and has no conflicts of interest.

---What's the difference between cold plunging and WBC?

It's a different type of stimulus with different effects. Cold plunging has more impact on internal tissue. WBC works differently as it is more of a "biohack" that manipulates the hypothalamus to create a stronger reaction than the stimulus would suggest.

---Is there evidence to show -110C electric chambers provide more benefit than other cryo chambers?

No. There is no clear data to support this claim. One study on animals showed that -50C was an optimal temperature.

---Is there any truth to the claim that a 30F-40F skin temperature drop is an indication of an effective WBC session?

Yes. If a large part of your body, such as the entire skin of your back, drops to 13.6C (56.5F), it should induce systemic analgesia (Pain Relief). The optimal dose of cold for each person and each session is different. If the dose of cold is too strong, it might not have the proper effect.

---Is there form of measurement other than skin temperature that the industry can use to determine if a WBC session was effective?

Skin temperature is the only known effective measurement at this time.

---Can you still get the systemic benefits of WBC from a nitrogen cryo chamber?

Yes.

--Does your neck and/or head need to be in the chamber to get the benefits of WBC?

For the time being, there is no clear data to show your head and neck inside of a WBC provides more systemic benefits. Nicolas shared that the data from his network shows that almost every cryo chamber manufacturer has an efficient machine, even nitrogen chambers. Dr. Andrew Huberman states you need 11 minutes/week of intentional cold exposure up to the neck to get the benefits.

---What is the optimal time of the day to do WBC?

WBC has been shown to have an impact on sleep, recovery, and the parasympathetic nervous system for athletes whether or not they do it before bed or in the afternoon after training. However, doing WBC before bed has been shown to have a bigger impact.
