A great way to manage pain outside of getting regular massages, is using heat!

Using heat helps increase blood flow and relax your tissue, often easing spasms and reducing pain. Using moderate heat for 15-20 minutes at a time can be helpful for chronic pain and stiffness, or overworked muscles.

Not everyone will benefit from using heat this way, so you should avoid it with symptoms like swelling or if you are dealing with an acute injury. Ask your doctor if you are unsure.

I would say 80% of my clients come in describing painful "knots", but what is a knot?

A muscle knot is described as a group of muscle fibers stuck in contraction, often causing pain. Sometimes people with a chronic knot are experiencing a fascial adhesion, which is different, but frequently used interchangeably. I will make a separate post about fascial adhesions another time.

The most important thing to know about a knot is that it is a real thing happening in your tissue, but it is not your muscle somehow tying into a knot. A knot is a great way to describe what the contraction feels like, but it isn't an accurate representation of what it is.

There are a variety of techniques and levels of pressure your massage therapist can use to reduce or eliminate the pain your knot is causing. Deeper isn't always better if your nervous system isn't allowing change to happen. Your therapist should check in on you to assess your level of comfort and don't be afraid to speak up if you aren't comfortable!
