I Thought We Had More Time

I have been a chiropractor, full-time, for almost 46 years. God has blessed me. It has given me purpose, and I pray everyday that he guides my hands, my heart, and my mind to let His healing power work through me. It is a joy to help someone in pain where other doctors have failed to. I know people are afraid of chiropractors, so I stay gentler and get great results. I get many referrals from patients, attorneys, and doctors. But in this article, let me give you a confession on a common theme I hear from so many patients that I believe this observation will change your life.
To change your heart, I will get direct now. In all my years in practice, I would listen to people. Women would tell me how their husbands get on their nerves. Men would tell me how their wives are bossy, that they just keep quiet and have no emotions anymore. Or complaints about an addicted child, or an alcoholic sibling, a demanding boss, or lazy employees. You get it, the list is endless. But guess what?
When that person dies, the person they complain of, do you think they come in and say, “good ridings, they were a pain in my side”? No, they come in and say, “we had such a good marriage” or “we were the best of friends”, or even “I loved them so much”. After a while, I cannot contain myself, So I ask, “you did nothing but complain about that person to me for twenty years, why couldn’t you just appreciate them while they were alive?”. They sadly respond, “I thought we had more time”. I guess in time, they were going to get along better. But I say this directly to you, they were living an illusion. Once the person is gone, their illusion becomes they had a great relationship, when reality is, it was not.
Listen, I understand. People do stupid things. I know how hard it is right now to love that person you are with, as they are. But here is my challenge to you- pretend that person was to die tomorrow. That you don’t have more time. You can’t do it by changing your mind, you must surrender to God and ask Him to help you to love the unlovable. Forgive the unforgivable. Forget what you can’t forget. His son, Jesus, died for those people that irk you. So, wise up, stop complaining, rejoice with your life and circumstances. Because, maybe, you will run out of time.
