I really feel very blessed to come in contact with a lot of different people in this field. This story in particular comes from a conversation with a client over the age of 60.
Most individuals over the age of 60 think it's harder to change for metabolic reasons or mobility or even that maybe their time of glory has passed. I do not subscribe to that ideology. Although, it may be a bit harder or might take a little longer it isn't any less attainable.
Here is some of this client's back story,
Female over the age of 60. Retired healthcare worker. Mom, Grandma and Montana resident. She was reasonably active prior to covid but not regularly since quarantine. Like most people, she had some weight gain. She also has multiple health problems that require supervision of her physician. She was told by her GP to find a trainer and have them help her lose weight. She was also referred to a registered dietician who gave her food guidelines like portion control and what her plate should look like.
Her programing with me provides regular contact via text, video as well as in person sessions once a week. She also is on a walking program to strengthen her lungs as well as her heart.
Since starting she is down -23 lbs in the past 6ish weeks.
I am very proud of her dedication so far and her tenacity even with obstacles in her way. It really is true, we are capable in all the ways we hope. Sometimes, we just need a little fire under our butt and a cheerleader in our corner.
I am so excited to see what lies ahead for her.
I had a conversation with a client today about food.
This particular individual drinks soda regularly.
When looking for weight loss, it is easy to say you need to restrict calories, i.e., calorie counting. We all know how fun that is. So consider just making a simple change like removing one thing.
1 soda a day can equate to 1400 calories a week. 2 a day 2800 a week. 20 a week = 4000 calories. The same goes for high calorie coffee and energy drinks.
3500 calories is the difference between a pound lost and a pound gained.
One can also argue that if you drink a zero calorie sodas, you get no added calories, so it's better. While that is true, IF calories were the only variable; most sodas are not made of anything that provides any real nutritional value to your life. They also spike the immune system and add toxins to the body that are hard to process out. In turn, collecting and stored as fat.
It's important to decide what is worthwhile to you and what isn't? Is it worthwhile to stress your body over something that doesn't benefit it? Or is it better to get rid of it?
We have no problem telling people to leave toxic relationships; how are certain foods any different?
