Balancing Self with Family Life

BY MADISYN TAYLOR
Taking time for daily self-care is vital and necessary and should not be seen as a luxury.
Many of us have a hard time balancing taking care of ourselves with taking care of our family responsibilities. For people with young children, this can be especially challenging, but even people without children have obligations to care for extended family, partners, pets, and the home in which they live. It's easy to lose track of our own needs as we give ourselves to the people, pets, and places we love. However, it is essential to their well-being that we take care of ourselves, filling our own wells with water so that we have something to offer when we return home each day.

It is easy to get caught up in the demands of home life because they never stop. There is always one more thing you can do, another dish in the sink, a counter that needs wiping, or a person who needs a ride somewhere. If you don't set some boundaries, you will find yourself on an endless journey of housework and doing for others. Eventually, you will probably feel drained and out of touch with your inner life force. Instead of waiting for this to happen, integrate self-care into your daily schedule. Even Buddha insisted that he have one hour completely to himself every day. There are times when even that will not be possible--for example, with a new baby or a sick relative. At times like this, retreating inward energetically can be a lifesaver. You can always find five minutes to close your eyes and breathe consciously. You may even be able to meditate.

Most of the time, though, it is possible to set aside a full hour for yourself each day. In addition, scheduling a longer interval of time, perhaps on a weekly basis, can really help to restore your energy. Get a massage or go to a movie or out with a friend. Taking time to experience the world outside of your home makes returning home all the more wonderful. In the same way, taking care of yourself is a natural complement to taking care of your home and family.

The Healing Power of Crystals
By Sasha Chinchar 2/2018

For centuries, people around the world have been using crystal/gem therapy as an alternative form of healing. Although the healing properties of these stones has not been scientifically proven, many believe in their power to change a person’s energy whether it be spiritually, mentally and physically. The theory is that gemstones carry certain vibrations that can change a person’s aura.

If you’re new to gemstone therapy, you may be wondering what healing properties these gems have, and which is right for you.

Calm
Amethyst crystals are known for their ability to soothe and relax you, which is why they are often present in spas. It is said to purify your aura, settling your thoughts and vibration. Agate is also known to promote peace and tranquility by bringing a sense of stability. Other crystals often used for calming include Calcite, Aquamarine, Jade, Rose Quartz and Blue Sapphire.

Strength
Strength can come in many forms, whether it’s mental or physical. Sometimes you need a bit of an emotional boost, some added confidence, strength and energy. Stones such as Agate, Hematite, Jasper, Onyx, Morganite and Turquoise can give inner strength by helping to heal emotions, build self-confidence and manifest your highest potential.

Balance
Whether your goal is to restore inner balance, seek guidance in balancing your life or balance your mind, body and spirit, crystals can assist. Turquoise and Amethyst can aid in balance by bringing focus and peace for emotional centering. Other stones promoting balance and harmony include garnet, emerald, agate, moonstone, and tourmaline.

Clarity
Often, one crystal can serves multiple purposes, as each emotion is tied to another. For example, Citrine is associated with confidence and strength because of the mental and emotional clarity it can bring. Diamond, Topaz, Quarts, Azurite and Hematite are also popular stones used for clarity, each offering a chance to focus and reset your mind.

Tips for Using Crystals
When choosing a crystal for you, follow your intuition. Often the one you are drawn to the most is exactly what you need. However, crystals aren’t a magical cure, you have to set an intention for your crystal, telling it exactly what you want it to do.

Once you choose a new crystal, recharge and clean it by setting it in sunlight or moonlight for 24 hours. Each time you do this, you will need to reset your intentions for your crystal.

Use crystals while you pray or meditate as part of your ritual. You can also carry or wear your crystal daily with crystal jewelry or crystal-based skincare and cosmetics, a new trend for 2018.

MISTAKE #4: TAKING HOT BATHS AND SHOWERS

Unwinding in a hot bath or shower at the end of a long day may feel relaxing, but the side effects it could have on your skin are anything but soothing. Hot showers and baths can be incredibly drying. Instead of scalding hot water, opt for lukewarm and keep the shower/bath length on the shorter side. Before you dry off completely, apply a creamy body lotion onto damp skin to lock in moisture.

MISTAKE #2: SKIPPING MOISTURIZER
This is a big no-no! All skin needs daily hydration, regardless of type. It’s important to moisturize immediately after cleansing, exfoliating, or showering, while skin is still slightly damp. If you are spending prolonged periods of time outdoors in cold and windy conditions, it’s a good idea to moisturize as soon as you head back indoors to reintroduce any lost moisture from the elements into the skin. Just as important as moisturizing is choosing the right product. Always pay attention to your skin type before choosing a moisturizer. Also, keep in mind the time of year. You’ll want to swap out your summertime go-to light, gel moisturizer in favor of a creamy, heavy-duty moisturizer during the cooler fall and winter months.

9 SKIN CARE MISTAKES THAT ARE DRYING OUT YOUR SKIN

Dry, flaky skin is the ultimate good-skin-day buzzkill (after acne blemishes, of course). Even more frustrating than the dry skin itself is the notion that a handful of bad skin care habits could be making our dry skin worse—without us even realizingMISTAKE #1: OVER-EXFOLIATING
Exfoliation offers numerous skin benefits and should be part of every gal’s routine. Ridding the skin’s surface of dead skin cells can not only make a complexion look bright and radiant, but can also help skin care products work more efficiently. But there could be too much of a good thing. Over-scrubbing the skin with—or exfoliating too often—can leave skin feeling raw, dry, and irritated. The jury’s still out on how often one should exfoliate, so it’s best to start with a lower cadence, maybe once or twice a week, and slowly build up a tolerance. Use a gentle scrub that gently exfoliates.

The Shot Glass Rule to Sunscreen
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Susceptibility to a sunburn is a red flag for susceptibility to skin cancer; however, everyone, regardless of skin type, is at risk for the potential adverse effects of UVR. Therefore, the use of sunscreen should be a part of everyone’s daily skin care routine.

Broad-spectrum products with a sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or greater are recommended. Sunscreens should be applied generously, repeatedly and to all parts of the skin that are exposed to the sun.

Studies have shown that the average size adult or child needs about the amount of sunscreen that it takes to fill a shot glass in order to evenly cover the entire body.

You can use the “shot glass rule” when applying sunscreen. Studies have shown that the average size adult or child needs about the amount of sunscreen that it takes to fill a shot glass in order to evenly cover the entire body.

Experts also agree that it is best for sunscreen to be applied 15 to 30 minutes before going out in the sun to allow the formation of a protective barrier and should be re-applied every two hours. Avoidance of the sun during peak daylight hours and the use of protective sunscreen are vital to keeping your skin young-looking and cancer-free.

4 Tips to be Sun Safe
To protect yourself against the sun’s harmful UV rays, here are some great tips on how you can be sun safe:

1.Wear SPF 30 or above regularly, especially when outdoors, using a full 1-ounce portion to cover all exposed parts of the body.
2.Be sure to rub the sunscreen in thoroughly and to reapply every two hours.
3.Wear a hat, protective clothing and sunglasses.
4.Don’t forget the tops of ears, feet and back of the hands!
Sun Safe Beyond Summer
IMPACT Melanoma, a national non-profit aimed at reducing the incidence of melanoma, is committed to sun safety. Recently, the organization conducted an independent national survey of 1,016 adults inquiring about the frequency of sunscreen application by season, sunscreen preference and opinions about free public sunscreen.

The results were in some ways anticipated with 86% of participants using sunscreen “always” or “sometimes” in the summer months, but also surprising, finding a nearly complete reversal of use between summer and fall, lower use of sunscreen in Southern states despite the warmer climates, and a concerning lack of use among African Americans, even in summer months.

Remind your friends and family, it is important to protect themselves all year long as the sun’s harmful UV rays are always present!
