If you switched to Castile soap because you wanted something more natural for your skin, this one's for you. 👀🌿
Castile is natural. It's plant-based. We used it too.
But here's what we didn't realize when we made that first “natural” swap: Natural doesn't automatically mean gentle.
Traditional Castile is a true soap—and true soap is naturally alkaline, commonly around pH 9–10. Healthy skin, on the other hand, naturally maintains a much more acidic surface. That difference helped explain something we'd experienced firsthand while formulating with Castile: that familiar tight, squeaky-clean feeling after washing.And eventually we started asking ourselves…Why are we trying to make our skin squeak in the first place?
Your skin isn't a countertop. Its natural oils and lipids aren't simply “dirt” to be scrubbed away.
So we went looking for another way to cleanse—and found one that's been used for generations. 🌳
Reetha, or soapnut, naturally contains cleansing compounds called saponins. It gave us a botanical cleansing foundation without relying on traditional alkaline soap chemistry—and ultimately changed the way we formulated our body washes and cleansers. We left Castile behind for our everyday skin-cleansing products. And once you understand the science, you may look at that bottle in your shower a little differently too. 👀
