Which washes your face better: oil cleansers or face wipes?

You know those nights when you’re just too exhausted to remove a full face of make-up? Seems to be the perfect time to just rub a make-up remover wipe across your face! Although these cleansing wipes can remove some of your make-up, they’re not removing as much as you think.

why wipes won’t cut it

Wipes actually just smear the dirt, bacteria, oil and make-up across your face. They break down some of the debris, but don’t remove it all. Then, the buildup gets stuck in your pores. Yuck! Although wipes may be faster to use, you are more inclined to miss a spot and sleep with make-up on, which can lead to breakouts. Plus, wipes are packed with ingredients like Specially Denatured (SD) Alcohol 40B and Denatured Alcohol, which evaporate quickly and can dry out your skin.

the “dirt” on oil-based cleansers

Oil-based cleansers can attract, deconstruct and dissolve layers of oil-soluble substances like excess sebum (oil), waterproof make-up, environmental pollutants and residual product buildup. The cleanser melts into skin, dissolving buildup in hard-to-reach crevices around your nose or in between eyelashes – places a wipe just can’t properly cleanse.

Use a cleanser like Dermalogica’s PreCleanse Oil or PreCleanse Balm to:

Gently dissolve and remove built-up residue and make-up.
Smooth, calm and nourish skin without clogging pores.
Enable your regular cleanser and other skin care products to work more effectively.

How To Avoid 'Maskne,' As Shared By Dermatologists

Article by American Spa Magazine.

Wearing face masks has become normal as people take action in preventing the spread of COVID-19. As the use of face masks increases, though, it has begun to cause skin irritation and acne breakouts, which the internet has nick-named “maskne.” In response to the new issue, dermatologists across the country have put together some skin care recommendations to help prevent and soothe mask-causing inflammation.

To help prevent further irritation and breakouts, dermatologic surgeon Dendy Engelman, M.D., put together tips to protect the skin. “Cleanse, cleanse, and don’t forget to cleanse!” said Engelman. “This first step is crucial, otherwise you are trapping bacteria under the mask and pushing it further into your skin. Use a gentle cleanser to not strip the skin of natural oils and keep the skin barrier intact.”

Lamb also suggests that people avoid toners, and instead incorporating a good moisturizer into the skincare regime. “Avoid using stripping products, like toners, on their faces and trying to apply good moisturizers to prevent irritation,” said Lamb.
As pores become clogged with dirt and oils, it is important to clean out pores in order to prevent acne. Engelman suggests using a chemical exfoliant for deep pe*******on. “Rather than harsh scrubs that can irritate compromised skin, choose a chemical exfoliant, such as one containing salicylic acid, which pe*****tes deep into pores to unclog them,” said Engelman. “Exfoliating will prevent further breakouts and speed up recovery time.”
Makeup should also be minimized as products such as thick concealers and foundations can trap bacteria in pores. “Swap out thick foundations and concealers for lighter, non-comedogenic formulas,” suggests Engelman. “Makeup plus sweat, plus a mask is trapping bacteria in your pores with nowhere to go.”

GET TO KNOW SALICYLIC ACID.
A great choice for acne-prone skin.

Unlike Alpha hydroxy acids (AHA) that loves water, salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA) that loves oil. It is able to get deeper into the skin and remove dead skin cells, excess sebum and oil that are often the cause of acne breakouts.

Salicylic acid is oil-soluble so it's able to pe*****te deep into follicles and break down blockages within, simultaneously reducing inflammation, unclogging congestion and exfoliating at the surface. It's a great choice for acne-prone and inflamed skins.

Salicylic acid is typically safe for use once or twice a day. The maximum strength for at-home use is 2% but you can get professional facials and peels containing salicylic acid that are much stronger.

Check out Dermalogica's Foaming wash. A daily cleanser for acne-prone skin containing Salicylic acid. Now available at Skin Geeks $19.50

DID YOU KNOW?

Healthy, smooth, even-toned skin – and good health – are the trade-offs for golden tans and too much time in the sun. Surprisingly, many people who think they are protecting themselves are following outdated, inaccurate advice that is jeopardizing their long-term skin health. Let's go over some of the things you should know.
Not all sunscreens protect against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays.

Many people think that applying any old SPF will keep us safe from both kinds of the sun's harmful rays. Unfortunately, this is not true. To understand why, look closely at the labels, ingredients and physical forms of the products you are buying.

SPF (Sun Protection Factor) indicates how long it will take for UVB rays – the main cause of sunburn – to redden the skin. For example, SPF 15 means it will take 15 times longer for skin to redden with the product on than without it. This has nothing to do with UVA rays, which are the same rays emitted by tanning booths. UVA rays pe*****te the skin more deeply, and play a major part in accelerating the signs of skin aging and generating skin cancer.

To protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays, don't just buy a product with an SPF of 15 or higher. Make sure it is labeled "Broad Spectrum," which means it contains a combination of ingredients known to protect skin against both types of UV rays. These could be chemical or physical sunscreens or a combination thereof. Chemical sunscreens (e.g., Avobenzone, Oxybenzone), work by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and physical sunscreens (e.g.,Titanium Dioxide, Zinc Oxide), reflect or scatter UV radiation.

Chemical or physical sunscreen? It's a matter of preference.
Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin and are usually more popular because they feel lighter and look less noticeable. They use active ingredients like Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Oxybenzone and Helioplex.

Physical sunscreens, or mineral sunscreens, sit on the surface of the skin. They can feel heavier and look more noticeable, but they provide added coverage and are more resistant to sweating and swimming. Look for active ingredients like Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide to identify them.

A base tan does not protect you from the sun.
There is no such thing as a safe tan. By definition, a suntan is your skin's defense to being harmed by UV exposure. Your cells respond to the affront by producing more melanin (pigment), and your skin darkens as a result. There is nothing healthy or preventive to be gained from trying to acquire a base tan.

Sunscreen isn't just for the summer.
Sun damage doesn’t just happen during the summer months or while at the beach. Photo damage or UV exposure (which causes aging) can occur from exposure to daylight through clouds, rain, glass and even fluorescent indoor lighting. This is why protecting the skin every day is imperative. Roughly 90 percent of photo aging is preventable by wearing SPF daily, so slather up!
You're probably not using enough sunscreen.

As a general rule, creams and lotions tend to deliver better protection than spray formulations, which most people don't apply enough of to get adequate coverage. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a "liberal use" of SPF 30 (picture a shot glass full of lotion) for the body, and reapplying every two hours (or after swimming or exercising). For the face, the rule of thumb is one teaspoon of sunscreen to deliver the SPF protection on the package.

Try Dermalogica's new Prisma Protect SPF30 is a broad spectrum SPF with light-activated defense to protect and shield your skin from harmful UV rays.

HOW DOES SKIN AGE?

Here's a breakdown of what happens to your skin while you're busy living.

Our skin starts to age as soon as we are born, but we don't typically think of it as aging until it starts to show dullness, spots, fine lines, wrinkles and loose, crepey texture. What causes these visible signs of aging is rather complex and varies according to your genetics and your exposome (lifestyle + environment). These are the key events:

As early as our 20s:

Unhealthy lifestyle habits, environmental damage and constant UV exposure begin compromising skin's structural integrity. Our cell defenses start to weaken in the face of free radicals, and our natural ability to fight off skin damage declines. Cell renewal and turnover rates also naturally start to slow, diminishing skin radiance.

In our 30s:

Collagen (which keeps skin firm) and elastin (which keeps skin bouncing back) degrade, resulting in visible wrinkles. Cell renewal and turnover continue to decline, leading to a duller complexion and uneven skin tone. Some cells can even become inactive, or turn into "zombies," giving rise to damaging inflammatory toxins that accelerate the appearance of skin aging.

By our 40s:

Skin appears thinner and its naturally-protective barrier lipids are not as pronounced. Dehydration can be an issue. Depending on hormonal activity, unusual activity may appear in skin from uneven skin tone to adult acne. More prominent signs of skin aging can also appear, such as dark spots and significant dullness.

After our 50s:

Our barrier lipid layer lessens, leading to less efficient moisture retention and more potential for sensitivity and dehydration. Chronic stress and inflammation both inside and outside of the body delays skin recovery – leading to lasting marks and longer healing times. By now, skin can show prominent wrinkles, fine lines and discoloration.

The secret to healthy-looking skin at every age

To get a healthy-looking glow at any age, it's imperative to evolve your skin care routine according to your lifestyle and environment. Adjustments are often necessary to account for a change in climate, health status or new skin care goals. Talk to a Dermalogica skin therapist at Skin Geeks whenever you're experiencing change in your skin for tips on how to proceed.

THE VITAMIN YOU NEED FOR COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS

Adding collagen-rich food (fruit and vegetables) and supplements (collagen powder, vitamin c ) to our diets can help increase collagen production and decrease fine lines and wrinkles.

Vitamin C is the proven vitamin that increases collagen synthesis. Studies show that increasing vitamin c intake assists in antioxidant protection against UV-induced aging.

In addition to boosting collagen, vitamin c is critical for the synthesis of hyaluronic acid, which is essential to maintaining our skin moisturized.

Beyond the usual fruits, we can find vitamin c in most plant foods including red peppers, kale, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and berries. Also, we can use vitamin c rich creams and treatments like
