We are thrilled and honored to receive our very first grant for Fishing in the D Foundation. This support validates our mission and fuels our passion to connect Detroit’s youth and families with the outdoors. With this grant, we’re not only opening doors to fishing and environmental education—we’re laying the groundwork to build lasting systems and opportunities that uplift our community. We can’t wait to see the positive, long-term impact this will have on Detroit!

🎣 Yesterday was one for the books! I improvised by tying my line to the dock rail and ended up catching a ton of bluegill — proving that passion and creativity always find a way! 💪🏾🐟

We’re also proud to announce that Fishing in the D Foundation is now the official stewards of a community garden on Detroit’s northwest side! 🌱✨
Through this space, we’ll be leading youth and community programming focused on:
🌿 Youth development
♻️ Sustainability & stewardship
🪱 Vermicomposting & vermiculture
💡 Entrepreneurship & environmental education

Big things are growing — both in the garden and in our community. 🌻

🎣 Meet Liam – Founder of Fishing in the D Youth Angler Club 🎣

At just 9 years old, Liam has discovered not just a hobby, but his calling — fishing. What started as a simple pastime has turned into a powerful vision:
🌊 to one day earn a college fishing scholarship
🏆 to go pro by 18 years old
💡 and to inspire a new generation of young anglers across Detroit.

Liam created the Fishing in the D Youth Angler Club to give kids something fun, positive, and educational to be part of — learning the basics of fishing, building confidence outdoors, and creating content that shows the joy of the sport. His goal is to build a brand that represents youth excellence, education, and empowerment through fishing.

This young entrepreneur is proving that passion has no age limit. 🌟
He’s now seeking sponsorships, partnerships, and donations from industry leaders who believe in youth development, conservation, and the future of fishing.

📩 DM us or email [email protected] to partner or donate.
Let’s rally behind Liam and show the world what’s possible when purpose meets passion. 💪🐟

🌊🎣 What an incredible day at our 1st Annual Fall Fishing Derby!

We came together with youth, families, and community partners for a day filled with learning, laughter, and fishing along the beautiful Detroit River. From first-time anglers catching their very first fish 🐟 to seasoned mentors guiding the way, the energy and excitement were unmatched.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing partners and volunteers who made this event possible. Your support helps us continue our mission of introducing Detroit youth to the joy of fishing, environmental stewardship, and the importance of community connections.

This was just the beginning — we’re building something special for the future of youth and outdoor recreation in Detroit. 💙

🌟 What an incredible day at the Black Tech Youth Digital Empowerment Summit 2025! 🌟

Yesterday’s Youth Tech Fest was truly inspiring — filled with energy, innovation, and the bright ideas of Detroit’s future leaders. I’m grateful to have represented Fishing in the D Foundation and show how technology, community, and the outdoors can come together to empower our youth.

A special thank you to my amazing volunteers — Adrienne from Black to the Land and Jordan from Better Business Detroit — for their dedication and support. 🙌 Your passion helped make the day a success.

Most importantly, thank you to all the youth who showed up with curiosity, creativity, and excitement. The experiences we shared are a reminder of why this work matters — building pathways, skills, and opportunities for the next generation.

🎣💻 Together, we’re proving that fishing, tech, and community can change lives.

🎣 FISHING IN THE D FOUNDATION presents our 1st Annual Fall Fishing Derby!
📅 September 27, 2025, 9 AM – 12 PM
📍 Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge – 5437 West Jefferson Ave., Trenton MI
This free, family‑friendly derby welcomes anglers of all ages and experience levels. Why this matters
Fishing in the D Foundation grew out of a simple tradition. Our partners make it possible
• U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service – The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is North America’s only international wildlife refuge. Refuge community‑engagement coordinator Lisa Bryant recently brought together Life on Purpose Detroit and Grow Detroit’s Young Talent to give the refuge a digital makeover, demonstrating how partnerships can empower youth and amplify voices .
• Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) – The DNR’s commitment to accessible fishing and outdoor education helps us teach safe angling practices and environmental stewardship.
• Black to the Land Coalition – A collective of Detroiters who organize kayaking, hiking, camping and fishing events specifically for people of color, aiming to reconnect Black and brown families to nature and build harmonious relationships with the land. The coalition formed in 2018 when several self‑sufficiency‑focused organizations united to share resources for archery lessons, elder camping programs and an Urban Forest School.
• Life on Purpose Detroit – This Detroit‑based organization coaches youth and adults in career readiness. In partnership with the refuge, they helped high‑school students spend 120 hours learning about the refuge’s ecosystems while developing digital‑marketing and entrepreneurship skills .
• Michigan State Extension 4‑H – Project FISH – Big thanks to Project FISH for donating rods, reels and instruction so our kids have quality gear and expert coaching. Their statewide network of volunteers ensures that the next generation of anglers learns safe, ethical and sustainable fishing.
• Many more supporters – Our volunteers, sponsors and donors make it possible for us to keep this program free and accessible.

🎣✨ Another proud moment on the water!

At Fishing in the D Foundation, nothing beats seeing Detroit youth light up when they reel in their very first catch of the day. Experiences like this build confidence, teach patience, and connect kids with nature—one cast at a time. 🌊🐟

📍 Oakland County, MI (Park shhhh 🤫)
💙 Empowering youth • Teaching skills • Building future conservation leaders

👉 We’re always looking for volunteers, sponsors, and community partners to help us create more moments like this. Join us in making an impact!
