When a vein cannot be seen because it is hidden beneath the skin, the doctor may use ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. For these procedures, the sclerosant solution is injected into the abnormal vein after it is targeted using ultrasound imaging. Varicose veins and spider veins are the results of a condition called Venous Reflux. Venous Reflux is a condition whereby blood that would normally flow back towards the heart flows the “wrong way” back away from the heart due to damaged valves located inside the veins.
